Professor Sang‐Sun Han's research lab specializes in advanced dental imaging and clinical applications, focusing on anatomical variations in the maxillofacial region, particularly retromolar canals and the trigeminal nerve's terminal branch complex (TCC), using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for precise diagnosis. The lab investigates image quality optimization in CBCT scans under varying patient positioning and exposure conditions, aiming to improve diagnostic accuracy. Additionally, the lab explores innovative training methods using virtual reality to enhance spatial cognition and navigation skills in individuals with visual impairments, particularly in wayfinding and obstacle recognition. The integration of medical imaging, surgical planning, and assistive technology defines the lab’s interdisciplinary approach to improving clinical outcomes and patient safety.

A retromolar canal is an anatomical variation in the mandible. As it includes the neurovascular bundle, local anesthetic insufficiency can occur, and an injury of the retromolar canal during dental surgery in the mandible may result in excessive bleeding, paresthesia, and traumatic neuroma. There are virtual reality (VR) wayfinding training systems for people with visual impairment, but there is a lack of studies about how training environments can affect spatial information acquisition of people with visual impairment. Precise knowledge of the TCC is clinically important for suitable local anaesthetic nerve block and the planning of surgical procedures that involve the mandibular ramus. Three-dimensional images of CBCT data are particularly effective for confirming the presence of this variation.
