Seiji Kojima教授の研究室は、細菌の鞭毛モーターがイオン勾配を利用して回転するメカニズムを解明することを主眼としています。特に、プロトンやナトリウムイオンの輸送と回転力の生成を結びつける「スターター複合体」の構造的・機能的メカニズムに焦点を当てており、MotBやPomBのペプチドグリカン結合ドメインの役割や、イオンチャネルの構造とダイナミクスの解明を進めています。また、鞭毛モーターの構造生物学的解析を通じて、微生物の運動性と病原性の関連についても探求しています。

Torque generation in the Salmonella flagellar motor is coupled to translocation of H(+) ions through the proton-conducting channel of the Mot protein stator complex. The Mot complex is believed to be anchored to the peptidoglycan (PG) layer by the putative peptidoglycan-binding (PGB) domain of MotB.
