中谷晋司教授の研究室は、地球内部の動的挙動を解明するため、地震活動の時間的・空間的変動を多角的に分析する研究を展開しています。特に、安定同位体を用いた地下水循環の追跡や、地震のb値・多Fractal次元の変化から大規模な地震の前兆現象を解明する手法の開発が特徴です。また、破壊のネットワーク的挙動を3次元フラクタルモデルで再現し、破壊の連続的進行や透過条件を数値的に解明する研究も進めています。

Stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen have the potential to serve as tracers for both source and flow paths in a groundwater system.
