Professor Sung Soo Kim's research lab specializes in regenerative medicine and neuroprotection, with a focus on cell-based therapies and neurotrophic factors for pediatric neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy. The lab investigates the synergistic effects of allogeneic umbilical cord blood and recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) to enhance neural repair and functional recovery. Additional research interests include ocular imaging, particularly subfoveal choroidal thickness measured via enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography, and its relationship with ocular perfusion and refractive status in various populations. The lab integrates clinical trials with advanced imaging techniques to translate findings into practical therapeutic strategies.

Allogeneic umbilical cord blood (UCB) has therapeutic potential for cerebral palsy (CP). Concomitant administration of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) may boost the efficacy of UCB, as it has neurotrophic effects. The objectives of this study were to assess the safety and efficacy of allogeneic UCB potentiated with rhEPO in children with CP. Children with CP were randomly assigned to one of three parallel groups: the pUCB group, which received allogeneic UCB potentiated with rhEPO; the

In vivo subfoveal CT as measured by EDI-OCT was significantly associated with OPP in young, healthy subjects when adjusted for RE, suggesting that subfoveal CT may be indirectly indicative of subfoveal ocular perfusion status. This association was not observed in subjects with high myopia.
Macular hole surgery using SF6 gas yields similar results as with C3F8 gas and may be a good option.
The mean subfoveal CT measurement showed the most significant positive correlation with refractive error and the most significant negative correlation with age. For patients younger than 60 years, there was a significant correlation of subfoveal CT with age and refractive error or axial length, whereas such significant association was not observed in subjects older than 60 years.
Our DL algorithm exhibited high performance for nAMD identification in a Korean population, and generalised well to an ethnically distinct, American population. The model correctly focused on the differences within the macular area to extract features associated with nAMD.
Mutation of the polarity gene Crumbs homolog 1 (CRB1) is responsible for >10% of Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) cases worldwide; LCA is characterized by early-onset degenerative retinal dystrophy. The role of CRB1 in LCA8 pathogenesis remains elusive since Crb1 mouse mutants, including a null allele, have failed to mimic the early-onset of LCA, most likely due to functional compensation by closely related genes encoding Crb2 and Crb3. Crb proteins form an evolutionarily conserved, apical polar
Acetabular anteversion was measured by using two-dimensional (2-D) computed tomography (CT) scans in 39 dysplastic and 27 normal hips (patient age range, 3-33 years), and averaged 19.7° in the dysplastic hips and 18.1° in the normal hips. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups, with a wide range of acetabular anteversion values noted in both groups (8-32°). Although acetabular anteversion may be increased in some patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip
In 2002 through 2015, 90.1% of adults in Korea received corticosteroids at least once. Although there was a clear difference in relative risk, this data analysis could not replicate the more than 30-fold increase in the risk ratio of CSC that has been reported previously. The incidence of CSC in the most vulnerable group, middle-aged men, was estimated to be approximately 1 case per 1000 corticosteroid users in the year following medication use. The overall incidence among those who had ever use
