Professor Sung-Chul Kim's research lab specializes in advanced optoelectronic devices and energy systems, with a strong focus on fiber optic sensors, thin-film transistors, and thermal energy storage technologies. The lab investigates the fundamental mechanisms governing device performance, including electrical stability in oxide semiconductors and wavelength interrogation techniques using fiber gratings. It also explores practical applications in sustainable energy solutions, such as phase-change materials for latent heat storage and pandemic-resilient construction protocols. The lab bridges materials science, photonics, and energy engineering to develop innovative, cost-effective, and stable technologies for real-world deployment.

From the transfer curves measured before and after bias stresses, we can observe that the high OFR degrades the
A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor demodulator using a chirped fiber grating is proposed. The demodulator uses UV-induced birefringence of chirped fiber grating to interrogate the wavelength shift of a sensor FBG. The demodulator is composed of a polarizing beam splitter, a polarization controller, a single-mode fiber, and a chirped fiber grating. The proposed demodulator is immune to light power fluctuation and is cost-effective.
We have analyzed the effects of the fiber cladding radius on the characteristics of long-period fiber gratings. By etching the cladding of a common single-mode fiber, we verified the characteristics experimentally. When by etching we reduce the cladding radius of a common single-mode fiber on which a long-period refractive-index modulation has been imposed, the coupling strength of the core and the cladding modes increases. In addition, the difference in the propagation constants (for a fixed wa
Chaos synchronization in two separate erbium-doped fiber lasers through a 1.5-km-long fiber is experimentally demonstrated. Two identical erbium-doped fiber lasers are fabricated and modulated by an optical modulator near the relaxation oscillation frequency of the fiber laser. At this frequency, the two fiber lasers generate chaotic carriers. When the synchronization conditions such as cavity length, modulation frequency, and laser characteristics are satisfied, the two chaotic fiber lasers are
The emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to a cost and time crisis for most construction projects around the world. Adherence to COVID-19 response guidelines for construction sites may prevent the occurrence of COVID-19 cases, which eliminates the risk of site closure. However, adding a disinfection process to the construction process, as mandated in COVID-19 response guidelines, increases overall construction cost and time. Conversely, however, not adding a disi
Building cooling and heating, solar-powered energy production, energy recovery, and other energy-consuming industries have all seen an increase in the use of cold/hot latent thermal energy storage (LH-TES). Through energy recovery, LH-TES that uses phase-change materials (PCMs) as a storage medium helps to close the energy supply and demand gap and raises the possibility of energy savings. However, the stability, thermal, physical, and chemical properties of the PCM play a major role in how effe
특히 Allen의 "Korean Tales : Being a collection of stories translated from the Korean folk lore"(1889), Hulbert의 "Omjee The Wizard-Korean Folk Stories"(1925)를 논의의 중심으로 삼는다. 또한 Aston과 Hulbert가 한국 문학에 대해 비평한 'On Corean popular literature'(1890)와 "The Passing of Korea"(1906)도 분석의 대상으로 삼는다. 결론을 먼저 밝히면, Allen의 "Korean Tales"는 서양에 처음 소개되는 작품집으로서의 번역 태도를 드러내고 있으며, Aston은 한글 소설 수집을 통해 한글
The relation between the low-frequency noise (LFN) and subgap density of states (DOS) of amorphous InGaZnO (a-IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) is investigated by changing the postannealing temperature from 150°C to 300°C. It is found that the density of the tail states in the TFT annealed at 300°C (showing the lowest LFN) is prominently lower than those in the TFTs annealed at 250°C and 150°C. The densities of the tail states in the TFTs annealed at 250°C and 150°C (indicating similar LFN) are
Inorganic 2D nanosheets are important building blocks for synthesizing efficient hybrid photocatalysts because of their advantageous characteristics such as highly anisotropic 2D morphology with subnanometer‐level thickness, wide surface area, defect‐free tunable surface, chemical composition diversity and crystal structure, and tailorable physicochemical properties. Since most of the components in exfoliated nanosheets are exposed on the surface, an unusually strong chemical interaction and a r
Capacitor structures utilized in modern dynamic random access memory (DRAM) cells require the conformal growth of high-k films on electrode materials. In this context, the atomic layer deposition (ALD) of rutile-phase TiO2 on nearly lattice-matched substrates such as RuO2 has been extensively explored. It is typically desired to grow such insulating films at high temperatures to ensure low defect concentrations and high crystallinity. However, with increasing growth temperature, it is also cruci
