We developed a highly selective ratiometric near-infrared cyanine-based probe CyAC for cysteine (Cys) over homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH). Upon the addition of Cys to the solution of CyAC, remarkable shifts in the spectra of CyAC can be monitored (from 770 nm to 515 nm in absorption spectra and from 780 nm to 570 nm in emission spectra). For the first time, the novel strategy that reversibly modulates the polymethine π-electron system by conjugation and removal of the specific trigger
In the body, soft tissues often undergo cycles of stretching and relaxation that may affect cell behaviour without changing matrix rigidity. To determine whether transient forces can substitute for a rigid matrix, we stretched soft pillar arrays. Surprisingly, 1-5% cyclic stretching over a frequency range of 0.01-10 Hz caused spreading and stress fibre formation (optimum 0.1 Hz) that persisted after 4 h of stretching. Similarly, stretching increased cell growth rates on soft pillars comparative
A new NIR fluorescent sensor based on an amine-substituted heptamethine cyanine dye displayed a highly selective fluorescence enhancement with cyanide in aqueous solutions, and was applied for the imaging of anthropogenic and biogenic cyanide.
Among the various anions, only cyanide induced the revival of fluoresecence of -Cu(2+) resulting in "Off-On" type sensing of cyanide, which can be monitored at pH 7.4 in 100% aqueous system, and has been applied to a microfluidic platform, in which fluorescent sensor -Cu(2+) displayed green fluorescence upon the addition of cyanide, the in vivo imaging of cyanide using Caenorhabditis elegans.
The environmental topology of complex structures is used by Escherichia coli to create traveling waves of high cell density, a prelude to quorum sensing. When cells are grown to a moderate density within a confining microenvironment, these traveling waves of cell density allow the cells to find and collapse into confining topologies, which are unstable to population fluctuations above a critical threshold. This was first observed in mazes designed to mimic complex environments, then more clearly
These results show that the microstructure can be used as a behavioral screen for mechanosensory and uncoordinated mutants. It is likely that worms use mechanosensation in the movement and navigation through heterogeneous environments.
This paper presents adaptive add-on control algorithms for the conventional mode of operation of MEMS z-axis gyroscopes. This scheme is realized by adding an outer loop to a conventional force-balancing scheme that includes a parameter estimation algorithm. The parameter adaptation algorithm estimates the angular rate, identifies and compensates the quadrature error, and may permit on-line automatic mode tuning. The convergence and resolution analysis show that the proposed adaptive add-on contr
Bacterial gene expression is frequently regulated by small molecules secreted into the surrounding medium. These autoinducers build up with increasing cell number until a critical population density or “quorum” is achieved, at which point the cells produce a response such as virulence or biofilm
In this paper, we report new rhodamine hydrazone derivatives bearing thiol and carboxylic acid groups as selective fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensors for Hg(2+). The ring-opening process of spirolactam enables the large fluorescent enhancement and colorimetric change upon the addition of Hg(2+). The sample containing Hg(2+) was mixed with one of the chemosensors in a microchannel where the sensor was examined using confocal laser scanning microscopy. A plot of the fluorescent intensities

Canine mesenchymal stem cells (cMSCs) derived from umbilical cord blood represent a potentially useful source of stem cells for therapy. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of different transplantation times of cMSCs after spinal cord injury (SCI). A total of 21 dogs were subjected to SCI by balloon-induced compression of the first lumbar vertebrae for 12 h. Of the 21 dogs, 12 were divided into four groups of three according to the time of stem cell (1 × 10(6)) transplantation at th
