Professor Tae Ho Lim's research lab specializes in critical care medicine and translational biomedical research, with a focus on improving outcomes in sepsis and burn injuries. The lab investigates novel biomarkers such as the delta neutrophil index for early sepsis prognosis and explores innovative therapies like nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasma jets (NAPPJ) for enhancing burn wound healing. Their work bridges clinical medicine and emerging technologies, aiming to translate laboratory findings into practical clinical applications. The lab emphasizes evidence-based approaches through rigorous meta-analyses and preclinical animal models to validate new treatment strategies.

The prognostic performance of the L/A ratio was superior to that of a single lactate measurement for predicting 28-day mortality of critically ill sepsis patients. L/A ratio can be a useful prognostic factor regardless of initial lactate level and the presence of hepatic or renal dysfunction.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), and their combination for mortality in patients with septic shock. This multicenter, prospective, observational study was conducted between November 2015 and December 2017. A total of 1,772 septic shock patients were included, and the overall 28-day mortality was 20.7%. Although both CRP and PCT were elevated in the non-survivor group, only CRP had statistical significance (11.9 mg/
We performed a meta-analysis to seek evidence for the usefulness of the delta neutrophil index (DNI) as a prognostic blood biomarker for mortality in the early stage of sepsis in adults. A literature search was performed using criteria set forth in a predefined protocol. Studies of adults with sepsis that provided a DNI measurement and that had mortality as the outcome, were included. Review articles, editorials, and non-human studies were excluded. The methodological quality of identified studi
It seems reasonable for septic shock to be defined by the lactate levels after volume resuscitation. However, owing to the small number of patients in whom lactate levels were improved, further study is warranted.
Worldwide, an estimated 6 million patients seek medical attention for burns annually. Various treatment methods and materials have been investigated and developed to enhance burn wound healing. Recently, a new technology, plasma medicine, has emerged to offer new solutions in wound care. As the development of plasma medicine has shown benefit in wound healing, we aimed to assess the effects of plasma medicine on burn wounds. To investigate the effectiveness of a nonthermal atmospheric pressure p
We assessed the feasibility of using a camcorder mobile phone for teleconsulting about cardiac echocardiography. The diagnostic performance of evaluating left ventricle (LV) systolic function was measured by three emergency medicine physicians. A total of 138 short echocardiography video sequences (from 70 subjects) was selected from previous emergency room ultrasound examinations. The measurement of LV ejection fraction based on the transmitted video displayed on a mobile phone was compared wit
The transdermal delivery system of nutrients, cosmetics, and drugs is particularly attractive for painless, noninvasive delivery and sustainable release. Recently, atmospheric pressure plasma techniques have been of great interest to improve the drug absorption rate in transdermal delivery. Currently, plasma-mediated changes in the lipid composition of the stratum corneum are considered a possible mechanism to increase transdermal permeability. Nevertheless, its molecular and cellular mechanisms
Adding copeptin to cTn improved the sensitivity and negative predictive value for the diagnosis of NSTEMI compared to cTn alone. Thus, adding copeptin to cTn might help to screen NSTEMI early upon admission to the ED.
Burn-related injuries are devastating injuries with a high mortality rate that affect people of all ages worldwide. We assessed the effectiveness of plasma jet treatment in altering the expression of genes involved in wound healing in a prospective longitudinal observational animal study. Six male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 350 g were used, and burn wounds were made by applying a preheated brass comb (100°C) to the back of the rats, resulting in four full-thickness burn wounds separated by thr
Hospital environments are associated with a high risk of infection. As plasma-treated hydrogen peroxide mist disinfection has a higher disinfection efficacy, we tested the efficacy of plasma-treated hydrogen peroxide mist disinfection on several surfaces in various hospital environments. Disinfection was performed in 23 rooms across different hospital environments, including hospital wards, outpatient departments (OPDs), and emergency rooms. A total of 459 surfaces were swabbed before/after disi
