Professor Taejoon Kang's research lab specializes in the development of advanced nanomaterials and plasmonic platforms for highly sensitive biosensing and environmental monitoring. The lab focuses on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based detection systems, integrating nanomaterials such as gold nanowires, nanopopcorn, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for applications in infectious disease diagnostics, antimicrobial resistance detection, and cancer biomarker identification. Key research directions include the design of multiplexed, quantitative, and field-deployable sensors for clinical and food safety applications.

A Au particle-on-wire system that can be used as a specific, sensitive, and multiplex DNA sensor is developed. A pattern formed by multiple Au nanowire sensors provides positional address and identification for each sensor. By using this system, multiplex sensing of target DNAs was possible in a quantitative manner with a detection limit of 10 pM. Target DNAs from reference bacteria and clinical isolates were successfully identified by this sensor system, enabling diagnostics for infectious dise
Putrescine and cadaverine are important volatile indicators for the evaluation of food spoilage. In this study, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-coated surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) paper platform for the detection of putrescine and cadaverine is developed. Au@ zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) SERS paper is fabricated by the coating of ZIF-8 layer on a Au nanoparticle-impregnated paper that is prepared by dry plasma reduction. The Au@ZIF-8 SERS paper is characterized by scanning
We developed a new surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based aptasensor platform capable of quantifying severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) lysates with a high sensitivity. In this study, a spike protein deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) aptamer was used as a receptor, and a self-grown Au nanopopcorn surface was used as a SERS detection substrate for the sensible detection of SARS-CoV-2. A quantitative analysis of the SARS-CoV-2 lysate was performed by monitoring the chan
Antimicrobial resistance and multidrug resistance are slower-moving pandemics than the fast-spreading coronavirus disease 2019; however, they have potential to cause a much greater threat to global health. Here, we report a clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-mediated surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) assay for multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. This assay was developed via a synergistic combination of the specific gene-recognition ability of the CRI
Telomerase has attracted much attention as a universal cancer biomarker because telomerase is overexpressed in more than 85% of human cancer cells while suppressed in normal somatic cells. Since a strong association exists between telomerase activity and human cancers, the development of effective telomerase activity assay is critically important. Here, a nanogap‐rich Au nanowire (NW) surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor is reported for detection of telomerase activity in various canc
ZnS nanowires and nanobelts doped with Mn and Fe were synthesized by a chemical vapor transport method. The Mn/Fe-doped and co-doped ZnS nanostructures were grown on Au-coated Si substrates. The key to this synthetic process of co-doping lies in the use of metal chloride as a metal carrier. Crystal structure and chemical compositional analyses by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicate that the nanowires and nanobelts are single-crystalline and uniformly doped with dopants. Strong emissi
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has affected people for over two years. Moreover, the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants has raised concerns regarding its accurate diagnosis. Here, we report a colorimetric DNAzyme reaction triggered by loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) with clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR), referred to as DAMPR assay for detecting SARS-CoV-2 and variants genes with attomolar sensitivity
We report an ultrasensitive and selective single nanowire-on-film (SNOF) surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) sensor for Hg(2+) detection based on structure-switching double stranded DNAs (dsDNAs). Binding of Hg(2+) induces conformational changes of the dsDNAs and let a Raman reporter get close to the SNOF structure, thereby turning on SERRS signal. The well-defined SNOF structure provides a detection limit of 100 pM with improved accuracy in Hg(2+) detection. This sensor is stabl
In early 2022, the number of people infected with the highly contagious mutant severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), called Omicron, was increasing worldwide. Therefore, several countries approved the lateral flow assay (LFA) strip as a diagnostic method for confirming SARS-CoV-2 instead of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which takes a long time to generate the results. However, owing to the limitation of detection sensitivity, commercial LFA str
We have developed a Au nanowires (NWs)-on-chip surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) multiplex sensor that can sensitively detect multiple toxic metal ions. Most importantly, the reporter elimination method simplified the detection procedure to a single step, which has been much desired for remote environmental monitoring. This sensor has several notable features. First, it shows high reproducibility based on well-defined single-crystalline Au NWs. Second, single-NW-sensors that can detect a
Well-defined surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active systems were fabricated by single-crystalline noble metal nanowires. Crossed and parallel nanowire pairs were constructed by using a nanomanipulator to create SERS hot spots in the form of nanowire junction. SERS spectra of brilliant cresyl blue (BCB), p-mercaptoaniline (pMA), and p-mercaptobenzoic acid (pMBA) were observed at the junction of two nanowires. The SERS enhancement and polarization dependence are correlated well with the e
Influenza viruses cause respiratory infection, spread through respiratory secretions, and are shed into the nasal secretion and saliva specimens. Therefore, nasal fluid and saliva are effective clinical samples for the diagnosis of influenza virus-infected patients. Although several methods have been developed to detect various types of influenza viruses, approaches for detecting mutant influenza viruses in clinical samples are rarely reported. Herein, we report for the first time a surface-enha
Aflatoxins (AFs) are highly toxic compounds that can cause both acute and chronic toxicity in humans. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is considered the most toxic of AFs. Therefore, the rapid and on-site detection of AFB1 is critical for food safety management. Here, we report the on-site detection of AFB1 in grains by a portable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. For the detection of AFB1, the surface of an SPR Au chip was sequentially modified by cysteine-protein G, AFB1 antibody, and bovine serum al
