Abstract This paper examines the possible linkage between the recent reduction in Arctic sea‐ice extent and the wintertime Arctic Oscillation (AO)/North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Observational analyses using the ERA interim reanalysis and merged Hadley/Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature data reveal that a reduced (increased) sea‐ice area in November leads to more negative (positive) phases of the AO and NAO in early and late winter, respectively. We simulate the atmospheric response
Abstract Recent evidence from both observations and model simulations suggests that an Arctic sea ice reduction tends to cause a negative Arctic Oscillation (AO) phase with severe winter weather in the Northern Hemisphere, which is often preceded by weakening of the stratospheric polar vortex. Although this evidence hints at a stratospheric involvement in the Arctic‐midlatitude climate linkage, the exact role of the stratosphere remains elusive. Here we show that tropospheric AO response to the
The influence of the Northern Hemisphere annular mode (NAM) on the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) was examined using 41‐year reanalysis data and an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM). Significant lag correlations between the NAM index for spring and the Niño‐3 index for the following winter were revealed. An anomalous lower tropospheric westerly associated with modulation of the westerly wind burst (WWB) over the western tropical Pacific in spring often coincided with the positive
Abstract. Subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) prediction, especially the prediction of extreme hydroclimate events such as droughts and floods, is not only scientifically challenging, but also has substantial societal impacts. Motivated by preliminary studies, the Global Energy and Water Exchanges (GEWEX)/Global Atmospheric System Study (GASS) has launched a new initiative called “Impact of Initialized Land Surface Temperature and Snowpack on Subseasonal to Seasonal Prediction” (LS4P) as the first int
We propose a possible mechanism for the influence of the Northern Hemisphere annular mode/Arctic Oscillation (NAM/AO) on westerly wind bursts (WWB). Using 26‐year reanalysis data, we statistically demonstrate and evidentially confirm that the NAM intensifies WWB through Asian cold and dry surges. Twin cyclones with anomalous westerlies and updrafts were dominant in the western tropical Pacific in positive NAM years. This structure was caused by the inflow of cold and dry advections associated wi
Amplified Arctic warming and its relevance to mid-latitude cooling in winter have been intensively studied. Observational evidence has shown strong connections between decreasing sea ice and cooling over the Siberian/East Asian regions. However, the robustness of such connections remains a matter of discussion because modeling studies have shown divergent and controversial results. Here, we report a set of general circulation model experiments specifically designed to extract memory effects of l
In June-July 2020 two remarkable weather events occurred in northern Eurasia. One is a severe heat wave that produced a record-breaking temperature of 38 °C at Verkhoyansk, eastern Siberia on 20 June. The other one is heavy rainfall events observed in East Asia (southern China and southwestern Japan) in early July, causing severe floods that brought about considerable damage to infrastructure and the economy, as well as the loss of human lives. Despite the accumulated evidence of stronger and mo
Abstract We demonstrated atmospheric responses to a reduction in Arctic sea ice via simulations in which Arctic sea ice decreased stepwise from the present‐day range to an ice‐free range. In all cases, the tropospheric response exhibited a negative Arctic Oscillation (AO)‐like pattern. An intensification of the climatological planetary‐scale wave due to the present‐day sea ice reduction on the Atlantic side of the Arctic Ocean induced stratospheric polar vortex weakening and the subsequent negat
A 1-year-lagged relationship between the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) in winter and El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the following year was examined with a multi-model ensemble analysis using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 3 models. A coherency index was developed as a measure of the coherence between the NAO and ENSO in each model and used as a weighting factor in the ensemble model. Weighted multi-model ensemble means of the regressed field on the maximum covariance anal
