Matano教授の研究室は、プリマトゥスザルを用いたHIV類似ウイルス感染モデルを基盤とし、特にサイトトキシックTリンパ球(CTL)のウイルス制御機能を解明する研究を推進しています。特に、SIVやSHIVに感染したマカクザルにおけるT細胞応答の役割や、効果的なAIDSワクチンの開発に向けた免疫応答の持続的制御機構を解明しています。また、最近ではSARS-CoV-2の非スパイク抗原を標的にする鼻内ワクチンの有効性についても、非ヒト霊長類モデルを用いて評価しています。
