Steep mountainous areas account for 70% of all river catchments in Japan. To predict river discharge for the mountainous catchments, many studies have applied distributed hydrological models based on a kinematic wave approximation with surface and subsurface flow components (DHM-KWSS). These models reproduce observed river discharge of catchments in Japan well; however, the applicability of a DHM-KWSS to catchments with different geographical and climatic conditions has not been sufficiently exa

An integrated hydrological-hydraulic model employing the 2-D local inertial equation as the core is established for effective numerical simulation of surface water flows in a great lake and its floodplain. The model is a cascade of validated hydrological and hydraulic sub-models. The model was applied to simulating the surface water flows of the Tonle Sap Lake and its floodplain in Cambodia using the roughness coefficient value calibrated comparing with a remote-sensing data set. The resulting m
A flood risk curve is the relation between annual maximum economic damage due to floods and its exceedance probability, which provides useful information for quantitative flood risk assessment. This study proposed to examine the applicability of d4PDF, a large ensemble climate projection dataset, to develop a probabilistic flood risk curve for the Yodo River basin (8,240 km2), Japan. The d4PDF is a climate dataset under historical and 4 K increase conditions with tens of ensembles and provide a
Abstract This study investigated simultaneous flood risk among all the 109 class-A river basins over Japan using the big data of (over 1000 years) annual maximum hourly flow simulated from a large ensemble climate simulation database for policy decision making for future climate change, and proposed a novel approach in its geospatial analysis by applying two informatics techniques: the association rule analysis and graph theory. Frequency analysis of the number of rivers with the annual maximum
During visual detection with saccades, a target with higher luminance is detected with reduced reaction times. In such visual detection behaviors, luminance-related sensory signals should be converted into movement-related signals for saccade initiation. At the site where the visuomotor transformation takes place, there is the possibility that visual activity not only encodes the target luminance but also affects the generation of an upcoming saccade. To assess this possibility, we recorded sing
Abstract Two methods exist to address the degree to which past extreme events and associated disasters will be intensified due to climate change: storyline approaches and risk-based approaches. However, the risk-based approach applied to weather similar to the target event (typhoons, a stationary weather front,…etc) becomes theoretically similar to the storyline approach. We examine this theory for the climate change impact of a real event, Typhoon Hagibis, which caused devastating flood damage
An impact assessment of a risk of water-related disaster under a changing climate has been highly concerned recently. For the assessment, it is important to examine a change of the magnitude of inundation disasters as well as that of flow regime under various climate conditions. To make an ensemble assessment of the magnitude of inundation disaster, systematic and computational cost-effective simulation is required. In this research, a flood-inundation model which nests a distributed rainfall-ru
Abstract. To manage flood disaster with an exceeding designed level, flood risk control based on appropriate risk assessment is essential. To make an integrated economic risk assessment by flood disaster, a flood risk curve, which is a relation between flood inundation damage and its exceedance probability, plays an important role. This research purposes a method to develop a flood risk curve by utilizing a probability distribution function of annual maximum rainfall through rainfall-runoff and
Recurrent neural network language models (RNN-LMs) are recently proven to produce better performance than conventional N-gram based language models in various speech recognition tasks. Especially, long short-term memory recurrent neural network language models (LSTM-LMs) give superior performance for its ability to better modeling word history information. However, LSTM-LMs have complex network structure and training configurations, which are meta-parameters that need to be well tuned to achieve
The neuronal processes that underlie visual searches can be divided into two stages: target discrimination and saccade preparation/generation. This predicts that the length of time of the prediscrimination stage varies according to the search difficulty across different stimulus conditions, whereas the length of the latter postdiscrimination stage is stimulus invariant. However, recent studies have suggested that the length of the postdiscrimination interval changes with different stimulus condi
