西智昭教授の研究室では、素材の摩擦・接着特性に着目し、特に水や油で潤滑された状態下におけるゴム・素材の滑り止め性能や皮膚・繊維間の接着性のメカニズムを解明しています。湿った環境下での歩行時の滑落防止に寄与するアウトソール素材の開発や、スポーツウェアの汗による「ね 黏り」感覚の物理的評価にも取り組んでいます。また、界面の潤滑状態や膜厚、実効接触面積の測定技術の開発も進め、実用的で信頼性の高い素材設計の基盤を構築しています。

High slip-resistant footwear outsoles can reduce the risk of slip and fall on wet and icy surfaces.
