During the past few years, cloud computing has become a key IT buzzword. Although the definition of cloud computing is still "cloudy", the trade press and bloggers label many vendors as cloud computing vendors, and report on their services and issues. Cloud computing is in its infancy in terms of market adoption. However, it is a key IT megatrend that will take root. This article reviews its definition and status, adoption issues, and provides a glimpse of its future and discusses technical issu
Genetically altering the disease vector status of insects using recombinant DNA technologies is being considered as an alternative to eradication efforts. Manipulating the endogenous immune response of mosquitoes such as the temporal and special expression of antimicrobial peptides like cecropin may result in a refractory phenotype. Using transgenic technology a unique pattern of expression of cecropin A (cecA) in Anopheles gambiae was created such that cecA was expressed beginning 24 h after a
This study aimed to investigate the effects of a two-day forest therapy program on individuals with chronic widespread pain. Sixty one employees of a public organization providing building and facilities management services within the Seoul Metropolitan area participated in the study. Participants were assigned to an experimental group (n = 33) who participated in a forest therapy program or a control group (n = 28) on a non-random basis. Pre- and post-measures of heart rate variability (HRV), N

CBT-based psychotherapy applied in the forest environment was helpful in the achievement of depression remission, and its effect was superior to that of psychotherapy performed in the hospital and the usual outpatient management. A good environment such as a forest helps improve the effect of psychotherapeutic intervention because it includes various natural instruments and facilitators in the treatment of depression.
The identified proteins were classified according to the viral factor as being involved in B-type and C-type HCC. These results suggest strongly that the expression pattern of proteome in HCC tissues is closely associated with etiologic factors. The different protein profiles between B-type and C-type HCC indicate that the pathogenetic mechanisms of hepatocarcinogenesis may be different according to the viral factor, HBV and HCV.
Hypoxia stimulates hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell growth via hexokinase (HK) II induction, and alternatively, HK II inhibition induces apoptosis by activating mitochondrial signaling. This study was to investigate whether the induction of HK II by hypoxia is associated with enhanced mitochondrial stability and to confirm the apoptosis-inducing efficacy of HK II inhibitor in an in vivo model of HCC. Mitochondrial stability was examined by treating isolated mitochondria with deoxycholate, a p
Injury to the renal microvasculature may be a major factor in the progression of renal disease; therefore, protection of endothelial cells (EC) in renal vasculature may have a therapeutic role in renal fibrosis. Recently, a soluble, stable, and potent angiopoietin-1 (Ang1) variant, cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP)-Ang1, was developed. The contribution of COMP-Ang1 in renal interstitial fibrosis, however, remains to be clarified. This study investigated the effects of COMP-Ang1 on perit
The results of this cohort study suggest that physicians may lean towards prescribing SGLT2 inhibitors as the preferred OAD for individuals with NAFLD and T2D, considering their potential benefits in NAFLD regression and lower incidences of adverse liver-related outcomes. This observational study should prompt future research to determine whether prescribing practices might merit reexamination.
For computational purposes documents or other objects are most often represented by a collection of individual attributes that may be strings or numbers. Such attributes are often called features and success in solving a given problem can depend critically on the nature of the features selected to represent documents. Feature selection has received considerable attention in the machine learning literature. In the area of document retrieval we refer to feature selection as indexing. Indexing has
Identifying which business ideas have real commercial potential is fraught with uncertainty, and even most admired companies have stumbled. It's not as if they don't know what challenges of innovation are. A new product has to offer customers exceptional utility at an attractive price, and company must be able to deliver it at a tidy profit. But uncertainties surrounding innovation are so great that even most insightful managers have a hard time evaluating commercial readiness of new business id
Steatosis severity may affect the diagnostic performances of noninvasive fibrosis tests in patients with NAFLD. The application of different tools should be tailored for various NAFLD subgroups to optimize noninvasive fibrosis assessments.
Phthalate esters, which are known endocrine disruptors, are ubiquitously present throughout indoor environments. Leaching from building materials may be a major source of phthalate esters. In this study, we evaluated phthalate ester concentrations in dust samples from 64 classrooms located in 50 nursery schools and explored the critical factors affecting phthalate concentrations, especially with regard to building materials. Dust was sampled by a modified vacuuming method, and building materials
