Professor Won Suk Choi's research lab focuses on infectious diseases, particularly viral pathogenesis and antimicrobial resistance, with a strong emphasis on clinical virology and bacteriology. The lab investigates the molecular mechanisms of viral replication and host-pathogen interactions, as seen in studies on MERS-CoV, poliovirus chimeras, and HIV-1-poliovirus hybrids. It also explores host cell signaling pathways, such as integrin-mediated thrombosis, using structural biology and biochemical approaches. The lab integrates clinical data with experimental virology and microbiology to address public health challenges like antimicrobial resistance and nosocomial outbreaks.

The clinical features of MERS-CoV infection in the Republic of Korea were similar to those of previous outbreaks in the Middle East. However, the overall mortality rate (20.4%) was lower than that in previous reports. Enhanced surveillance and active management of patients during the outbreak may have resulted in improved outcomes.

Acinetobacter baumannii has been increasingly reported as a significant causative organism of various nosocomial infections.
