Professor Woojae Kim's research lab specializes in the fundamental photophysics and excited-state dynamics of organic semiconductors, with a focus on charge transfer, energy migration, and singlet fission in tailored molecular architectures. The lab investigates how molecular structure—particularly in quadrupolar dyes, perylene bisimide dimers, and pentacene-based covalent dimers—affects electronic and structural dynamics in real time. Using advanced ultrafast spectroscopic techniques such as time-resolved fluorescence, impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy, and Bayesian adaptive psychophysics, the lab deciphers the interplay between electronic transitions, solvent effects, and structural reorganization. Their work bridges molecular design with functional applications in optoelectronics, photovoltaics, and biomedical imaging.

As the selected prognostic factors can be easily obtained in clinical practice, the proposed model might prove useful in the prediction of breast cancer recurrence. The prediction model is freely available in the website (http://ami.ajou.ac.kr/bcr/).
The contrast sensitivity function (CSF) has shown promise as a functional vision endpoint for monitoring the changes in functional vision that accompany eye disease or its treatment. However, detecting CSF changes with precision and efficiency at both the individual and group levels is very challenging. By exploiting the Bayesian foundation of the quick CSF method (Lesmes, Lu, Baek, & Albright, 2010), we developed and evaluated metrics for detecting CSF changes at both the individual and group l
Experimentation is at the core of research in the behavioral and neural sciences, yet observations can be expensive and time-consuming to acquire (e.g., MRI scans, responses from infant participants). A major interest of researchers is designing experiments that lead to maximal accumulation of information about the phenomenon under study with the fewest possible number of observations. In addressing this challenge, statisticians have developed adaptive design optimization methods. This letter in
Excimer, a configurational mixing between Frenkel exciton and charge-transfer resonance states, is typically regarded as a trap state that hinders desired energy or charge-transfer processes in artificial molecular assemblies. However, in recent days, the excimer has received much attention as a functional intermediate in the excited-state dynamics such as singlet fission or charge-separation processes. In this work, we show that the relative contribution to charge-transfer resonance of the exci
The effect of the length of pendant side chains in centrosymmetric quadrupolar molecules on dynamics of their most perplexing photophysical phenomenon, i.e., symmetry-breaking intramolecular charge transfer, has been discovered. Unexpectedly, considerable influence of length of these pendant side chains in π-linkers arose as a structural factor enabling the control of the degree of fluorescence solvatochromism. The symmetry-breaking intramolecular charge-transfer dynamics has been described on q
Most full-reference image quality assessment (FR-IQA) methods advanced to date have been holistically designed without regard to the type of distortion impairing the image. However, the perception of distortion depends nonlinearly on the distortion type. Here we propose a novel FR-IQA framework that dynamically generates receptive fields responsive to distortion type. Our proposed method-dynamic receptive field generation based image quality assessor (DRF-IQA)-separates the process of FR-IQA int
Although it is well-known that the negative effects of VR sickness, and the desirable sense of presence are important determinants of a user's immersive VR experience, there remains a lack of definitive research outcomes to enable the creation of methods to predict and/or optimize the trade-offs between them. Most VR sickness assessment (VRSA) and VR presence assessment (VRPA) studies reported to date have utilized simple image patterns as probes, hence their results are difficult to apply to th
Elucidating structural roles in photoinduced charge transfer is indispensable, as nuclear rearrangements are simultaneously usually involved in the dynamics. However, it is hard to evaluate whether the structural changes occur or not by using conventional time-resolved electronic spectroscopy. Here, time-resolved impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy is applied to record the evolution of vibrational snapshots during charge-separation dynamics of donor-acceptor-donor-type quadrupolar perylene b
Measurement efficiency is of concern when a large number of observations are required to obtain reliable estimates for parametric models of vision. The standard entropy-based Bayesian adaptive testing procedures addressed the issue by selecting the most informative stimulus in sequential experimental trials. Noninformative, diffuse priors were commonly used in those tests. Hierarchical adaptive design optimization (HADO; Kim, Pitt, Lu, Steyvers, & Myung, 2014) further improves the efficiency of
The nomogram can be easily used in daily practice to aid physicians and patients in making appropriate treatment decisions after breast cancer surgery.
Covalent dimers, particularly pentacenes, are the dominant platform for developing a mechanistic understanding of intramolecular singlet fission (iSF). Numerous studies have demonstrated that a photoexcited singlet state in these structures can rapidly and efficiently undergo exciton multiplication to form a correlated pair of triplets within a single molecule, with potential applications from photovoltaics to quantum information science. One of the most significant barriers limiting such dimers
Red Bull is a carbonated beverage that initially gained wide popularity in the U.S. during the late nineties. Taking root amongst college campuses, it appeared throughout underground clubs and eventually entered mainstream pop-culture. The manufactures claim that drinking Red Bull enhances physical endurance, concentration and reaction speed (1,6). The main ingredients of Red Bull include sugar, taurine, glucuronolactone and caffeine. It is hypothesized that the combinatorial influences of these
The proposed method was able to measure CBF more objectively and efficiently than what is currently possible.
A multitude of ultrafast photoinduced reactions in organic semiconductors are governed by the close interplay between nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom. From biological light-harvesting and photoprotection to organic solar cells, the critical electronic dynamics are often precisely synchronized with and driven by nuclear motions, in a breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Ultrafast time-domain Raman methods exploit impulsive excitation to generate nuclear wavepackets and track
