西武誠教授の研究室は、心血管疾疾患における細胞外マトリックスのリモデリングと血管新生の分子機構に注目し、特にカテプシンやマトリックスメタロプロテアーゼ(MMP)といったプロテアーゼの機能とその調節機構を解明しています。高血圧性心筋症や動脈硬化の病態において、カテプシンS やMMP-2 が炎症・組織修復・血管新生に果たす役割を分子・細胞レベルで解明しており、老化に伴う血管・筋再生能の低下に関連するシグナル伝達経路(AMPK・アドポネクチンレセプター経路)の解明も進んでいます。
