[1] A swarm earthquake sequence is often assumed to be triggered by fluid flow within a brittle fault damage zone, which is assumed to be highly permeable. However, there is little seismological evidence of the relation between the fluid flow within the fault damage zone and the occurrence of swarm earthquakes. Here, we precisely determine the hypocenters and focal mechanisms of swarm earthquakes that occurred in the caldera of Hakone volcano, central Japan, using data from a dense seismic netwo
In the present study, we analyze the seismic signals from a continuous volcanic tremor that occurred during a small phreatic eruption of the Hakone volcano, in the Owakudani geothermal region of central Japan, on June 29, 2015. The signals were detected for 2 days, from June 29 to July 1, at stations near the vents. The frequency component of the volcanic tremors showed a broad peak within 1–6 Hz. The characteristics of the frequency component did not vary with time and were independent of the a
In order to clarify the origin of aftershocks, we precisely analyze the hypocenters and focal mechanisms of the aftershocks following the 2000 Western Tottori Earthquake, which occurred in the western part of Japan, using data from dense seismic observations. We investigate whether aftershocks occur on the mainshock fault plane on which coseismic slip occurred or they represent the rupture of fractures surrounding the mainshock fault plane. Based on the hypocenter distribution of the aftershocks
Abstract High‐resolution images of subsurface structures are necessary to understand the transport processes of crustal fluids from deep magma sources and their relationship to earthquake swarms in active volcanic regions. Based on a seismic tomography approach, we have developed a new model for the magma‐hydrothermal system beneath Hakone volcano, central Japan, where shallow earthquake swarms and crustal deformation associated with inflation of an open‐crack source are often observed. By apply
Seismic activity in the Hakone volcano at an epicentral distance of 450 km was remarkably activated just after the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake. More than 1600 events were observed in the caldera of the volcano, from 15:00 on March 11 to 12:00 on April 2. To clarify the relationship between the occurrence of the main shock and the induced activity in the Hakone volcano, we investigated the spatial distribution of hypocenters and temporal changes of the seismicity, and we exami
Abstract Recent seismic and geodetic observations suggest the involvement of pressurized fluid and aseismic slip during earthquake swarms. However, the interaction between these two factors is not fully understood. In this study, we show geodetic signals induced by aseismic opening and shear dislocation on a fault, accompanied by hypocenter migration during an earthquake swarm in the Hakone volcano, central Japan. The hypocenters were concentrated on a vertical plane, and the focal mechanisms we
Abstract Deep low‐frequency earthquakes (DLFEs) are ubiquitous seismic activities in the deep parts of volcanoes. Owing to the low signal‐to‐noise ratio, the seismic activities of DLFEs have not been characterized in detail; particularly, the linkage between DLFEs and shallow volcanic activity has not been understood sufficiently. In this study, numerous DLFEs have been successfully detected beneath the Hakone volcano, central Japan, by cross‐correlating a template to the continuous seismic sign
We estimated the regional stress field before and after the 2000 Western Tottori Earthquake (Mw = 6.6) from numerous focal mechanisms. To constrain the stress field prior to the main shock, we compared the spatial distribution of the static stress changes generated by the main shock with the stress field following the main shock. In the northern and central parts of the aftershock region, it is inferred that the deviatoric stress magnitude prior to the main shock was too large to be affected by
Abstract Delineation of the characteristics of magmatic fluid such as melt and water beneath volcanoes has been challenging. In this study, we obtained a detailed picture of the magma reservoir beneath the felsic caldera of Hakone volcano, central Japan using a velocity model obtained from a dense seismic observation network. In the shallow region of the caldera, a high‐velocity region associated with a solidified magma where many earthquake swarms occur was estimated, and a significantly low‐ve
We estimate the stress field after the 1984 western Nagano earthquake from numerous focal mechanisms. To precisely determine the focal mechanisms, we analyze the earthquakes that occurred around the eastern part of the main shock fault, where station coverage is fairly good. Most of the earthquakes that occurred in this part, except the main shock fault, are reverse fault types. In contrast, earthquakes that occurred near the main shock fault have T axes distributed in a belt (strike slip, obliq
Autocorrelation functions (ACFs) for ambient seismic noise are considered to be useful tools for estimating temporal changes in the subsurface structure. Velocity changes at Hakone volcano in central Japan, where remarkable swarm activity has often been observed, were investigated in this study. Significant velocity changes were detected during two seismic activities in 2011 and 2013. The 2011 activity began immediately after the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake, suggesting remote triggering by the dy
To understand the initial process of the phreatic eruption of the Hakone volcano from June 29 to July 01, 2015, we analyzed infrasound data using the cross-correlation between infrasound and vertical ground velocity and compared the results of our analysis to the crustal deformation detected by tiltmeters and broadband seismometers. An infrasound signal and vertical ground motion due to an infrasound wave coupled to the ground were detected simultaneously with the opening of a crack source benea
