Professor Yon Ho Choe's research lab focuses on the intersection of gastrointestinal health, iron metabolism, and neurobiological mechanisms underlying chronic diseases. Key research directions include the role of *Helicobacter pylori* infection in iron-deficiency anemia and growth retardation in children, the neurotrophic regulation of dopaminergic pathways in stress and reward processing, and the management of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease with biologic therapies. The lab also investigates molecular mechanisms such as lactoferrin sequestration in gastric mucosa and the translational efficacy of biosimilars in pediatric IBD.

Treatment of H. pylori infection was associated with more rapid response to oral iron therapy as compared with the use of iron therapy alone. Such treatment also led to enhanced iron absorption even in those subjects who did not receive oral iron therapy.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether Helicobacter pylori infection can contribute to growth deficit, especially in pubescent children who need large amounts of iron for growth. A structured questionnaire was sent to the parents of 532 healthy children aged 10 to 15 years (mean 12.9) to obtain demographic information on the parents and the environment. Of the 532 questionnaires sent out, 375 (70.5%; 170 girls and 205 boys) were returned. After collecting blood samples from participa
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in dopaminergic (DA) cells within the ventral tegmental area (VTA)/nucleus accumbens (NAc) circuitry appear to be a candidate mechanism for the neuroadaptive changes that follow stress and reward responses in animal models. However, the role of the <i>BDNF</i> gene variants in responses to salient cues through DA neurotransmission in humans remains unexplored. Here, we studied the effect of the common functional <i>BDNF</i> Val66Met (rs6
The lactoferrin sequestration in the gastric mucosa of HPIDA was remarkable, and this finding seems to give a clue that leads to the clarification of the mechanism by which H. pylori infection contributes to iron-deficiency anemia.
"Top-down" strategy had a longer remission period compared with the "step-up" strategy in pediatric Crohn disease during a study period of 3 years, based on relapse-free rate and remission period rate. Earlier introduction of infliximab is recommended in pediatric patients with moderate to severe Crohn disease.
Switching from maintenance infliximab RP to CT-P13 did not result in any significant differences in efficacy, pharmacokinetics, or immunogenicity in patients with pediatric-onset IBD, and no unexpected safety issues occurred, supporting findings from randomized controlled trials.
Associations between serum infliximab trough concentrations and mucosal healing were observed in paediatric patients. Identification of the infliximab trough level that positively associates with mucosal healing in most paediatric patients with Crohn's disease [≥5 µg/mL] may guide treatment decisions to optimise therapeutic response in the era of treat-to-target.
Our results suggest that IGF-I or GH/IGF axis deficiency appears to be unrelated to observed GEC increases in the stomach of patients with PWS.
The mutation in the pfr gene did not relate with the clinical phenotype, iron deficiency anemia. Further studies are needed on the aspects of host side or other complex factors to elucidate the mechanisms by which the H. pylori infection might lead to iron deficiency anemia.
We conducted a study to clarify the incidence, clinical course, and risk factors of de novo allergies after liver transplantation. Ninety-three patients who had been followed longer than one yr and who had no previous allergy history were included. Forty-two patients (45.2%) developed de novo allergy. Of them, food allergy developed in 35 (37.6%). Respiratory allergy was observed in three (3.2%), and a patient (1.1%) had drug allergy. Fifty-two (55.9%) of the 93 patients developed eosinophilia.
The four polymorphisms of the feoB gene observed appear to be related to the clinical phenotype of IDA, but the relation is unclear because of the small number of strains studied. Further studies are required to confirm a correlation between IDA and H. pylori infection.
The selection of each alternative for long-term management according to the results of the assessment of symptoms at week 8 was useful and well tolerated. 'On-demand' therapy was equally effective. The 16-week therapy had the same efficacy as the 24-week therapy with regard to long-term lansoprazole treatment.
Considering the high cumulative relapse rates in the long term and cases of severe relapse requiring surgery, discontinuing infliximab in paediatric-onset Crohn's disease patients is currently inadvisable. However, there may be a subgroup of patients who are good candidates for infliximab withdrawal.
NUDT15 polymorphisms were associated with time-to-leucopenia during azathioprine treatment in Korean paediatric patients with IBD. In order to reduce the development of thiopurine-induced leucopenia (<15%) in NUDT15 intermediate metabolisers, adjustment of azathioprine doses should be based on a lower 6-TGN target level (<167.1 pmol/8 × 108 RBC).
