Professor Yong Jun Choi's research lab focuses on translational and clinical research in respiratory and metabolic diseases, with a strong emphasis on understanding the impact of underlying conditions on clinical outcomes in infectious diseases such as COVID-19. The lab investigates the pathophysiology of chronic lung diseases like asthma and COPD, particularly the role of comorbidities and muscle wasting (sarcopenia) in disease progression. Additionally, the lab explores biochemical and molecular mechanisms in food safety, including biogenic amine formation in fermented fish products, and contributes to oncology research through rare neurological manifestations of hematologic malignancies, such as neurolymphomatosis. The integration of clinical data, molecular biology, and translational research defines the lab’s multidisciplinary approach.

Low muscle mass negatively affects the clinical outcomes in patients with COPD. Despite its clinical significance, muscle mass measurement is performed in a small proportion of patients with COPD. Therefore, protocols and guidelines for the screening of sarcopenia in patients with COPD should be established.
