Professor Yongwoo Jang's research lab focuses on the development of bio-integrated smart systems and implantable electronic devices, with a strong emphasis on nanomaterials and their applications in biomedicine. The lab explores the intersection of nanotechnology, neuroscience, and bioelectronics, particularly in designing flexible, stretchable, and biocompatible devices for in vivo energy storage and neural modulation. Key research directions include carbon nanotube-based supercapacitors for implantable systems, ion channel mechanisms in neurological disorders such as bipolar disorder and hereditary neuropathies, and the development of advanced biosensors for monitoring physiological functions like gastric motility. The lab also investigates redox biomolecules and their integration into next-generation bioelectronic systems.

Smart systems are those that display autonomous or collaborative functionalities, and include the ability to sense multiple inputs, to respond with appropriate operations, and to control a given situation. In certain circumstances, it is also of great interest to retain flexible, stretchable, portable, wearable, and/or implantable attributes in smart electronic systems. Among the promising candidate smart materials, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibit excellent electrical and mechanical properties,
Arachidonic acid-derived prostaglandins not only contribute to the development of inflammation as intercellular pro-inflammatory mediators, but also promote the excitability of the peripheral somatosensory system, contributing to pain exacerbation. Peripheral tissues undergo many forms of diseases that are frequently accompanied by inflammation. The somatosensory nerves innervating the inflamed areas experience heightened excitability and generate and transmit pain signals. Extensive studies hav
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a mental disorder that causes changes in mood and the etiology is still unknown. TRPM2 is highly associated with BD; however, its involvement in the etiology of BD is still unknown. We show here that TRPM2 plays a central role in causing the pathology of BD. We found that D543E, a mutation of Trpm2 frequently found in BD patients, induces the loss of function. Trpm2-deficient mice exhibited mood disturbances and impairments in social cognition. TRPM2 actively regulates t
The strong peristaltic contraction of the stomach facilitates mixing and emptying of ingested food, which occurs rhythmically at approximately 3 cycles/min (cpm) in humans. Generally, most patients with gastroparesis show gastric electrical dysrhythmia that is disrupted electrical signals controlling gastric contractions. For treatment of gastric electrical dysrhythmia, in vivo electrical impulses to the stomach via an implanted gastric stimulator have been known to restore these gastric deforma
Spinal muscular atrophy and hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies are characterized by muscle weakness and atrophy caused by the degenerations of peripheral motor and sensory nerves. Recent advances in genetics have resulted in the identification of missense mutations in TRPV4 in patients with these hereditary neuropathies. Neurodegeneration caused by Ca(2+) overload due to the gain-of-function mutation of TRPV4 was suggested as the molecular mechanism for the neuropathies. Despite the impor
The carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn supercapacitor has high potential for in vivo energy storage because it can be used in aqueous environments and stitched to inner parts of the body, such as blood vessels. The biocompatibility issue for frequently used pseudocapacitive materials, such as metal oxides, is controversial in the human body. Here, we report an implantable CNT yarn supercapacitor inspired by the cellular redox system. In all living cells, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a key
The current study found for the first time that RGE effectively blocks histamine-induced itch in peripheral sensory neurons. We believe that the current results will provide an insight on itch transmission and will be helpful in understanding how RGE exerts its antipruritic effects.
Naringin exhibits an in vivo prokinetic activity by a preferable local activation of ghrelin receptor. Moreover, we propose that naringin could play a role as a leading compound for the development of ghrelin receptor-based prokinetic agents.
Until recently, Nurr1 (NR4A2) was known as an orphan nuclear receptor without a canonical ligand-binding domain, featuring instead a narrow and tight cavity for small molecular ligands to bind. In-depth characterization of its ligand-binding pocket revealed that it is highly dynamic, with its structural conformation changing more than twice on the microsecond-to-millisecond timescale. This observation suggests the possibility that certain ligands are able to squeeze into this narrow space, induc
