Yoshiro Saito教授の研究室は、セレン代謝と酸化的ストレスの関連を解明するため、セレノプロテインPの構造・機能とその生理的役割に焦点を当てた研究を行っています。特に、セレノプロテインPがリン脂質過酸化物を還元する酵素活性を持ち、セレンを標的臓器へ輸送する役割を果たすことを明らかにしてきました。また、細胞死の種類(アポトーシスとネクローシス)の分岐メカニズムや、セレン欠乏が細胞生存に与える影響についても、T細胞系を用いた詳細な細胞生物学的アプローチを展開しています。

The turning point between apoptosis and necrosis induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) have been investigated using human T-lymphoma Jurkat cells. Cells treated with 50 microM H2O2 exhibited caspase-9 and caspase-3 activation, finally leading to apoptotic cell death.
