Professor Young Chul Jun's research lab specializes in nanophotonics and metamaterials, focusing on the design and engineering of tunable, reconfigurable optical and plasmonic devices. The lab explores strong light-matter interactions in hybrid nanostructures, including epsilon-near-zero materials, 2D and 3D photonic waveguides, and chiral metasurfaces, with applications in integrated optics, nanoscale light sources, and active infrared devices. A key research direction involves electrically tunable metamaterials and 4D-printed responsive photonic structures for dynamic control of light across visible to mid-infrared wavelengths. The lab combines theoretical modeling, nanofabrication, and experimental validation to advance next-generation photonic technologies.

We present a new type of electrically tunable strong coupling between planar metamaterials and epsilon-near-zero modes that exist in a doped semiconductor nanolayer. The use of doped semiconductors makes this strong coupling tunable over a wide range of wavelengths through the use of different doping densities. We also modulate this coupling by depleting the doped semiconductor layer electrically. Our hybrid approach incorporates strong optical interactions into a highly tunable, integrated devi
We theoretically investigate the spontaneous emission process of an optical, dipolar emitter in metal-dielectric-metal slab and slot waveguide structures. We find that both structures exhibit strong emission enhancements at nonresonant conditions, due to the tight confinement of modes between two metallic plates. The large enhancement of surface plasmon-polariton excitation enables dipole emission to be preferentially coupled into plasmon waveguide modes. These structures find applications in cr
Abstract Three‐dimensional (3D) printing is a new paradigm in customized manufacturing and allows the fabrication of complex optical components and metaphotonic structures that are difficult to realize via traditional methods. Conventional lithography techniques are usually limited to planar patterning, but 3D printing can allow the fabrication and integration of complex shapes or multiple parts along the out‐of‐plane direction. Additionally, 3D printing can allow printing on curved surfaces. Fo
We investigate the light emission properties of electrical dipole emitters inside 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) silicon slot waveguides and evaluate the spontaneous emission enhancement (F(p)) and waveguide coupling ratio (beta). Under realistic conditions, we find that greater than 10-fold enhancement in F(p) can be achieved, together with a beta as large as 0.95. In contrast to the case of high Q optical resonators, such performance enhancements are obtained over a broad wavelength
We demonstrate electrically-controlled active tuning of mid-infrared metamaterial resonances using depletion-type devices. The depletion width in an n-doped GaAs epilayer changes with an electric bias, inducing a change of the permittivity of the substrate and leading to frequency tuning of the resonance. We first present our detailed theoretical analysis and then explain experimental data of bias-dependent metamaterial transmission spectra. This electrical tuning is generally applicable to a va
Abstract Although numerous natural materials exhibit chiral optical phenomena, they are typically very weak. Chiral nanophotonic structures can significantly enhance the chiroptical responses and provide unprecedented design flexibility. However, achieving extreme chirality that approaches the ultimate theoretical limit remains challenging. Here, chiral quasibound states in the continuum are realized in the visible range, and maximally chiral emission from a perovskite metasurface is demonstrate
A metal−dielectric−metal (MDM) waveguide with a nanoscale gap supports highly confined surface plasmon−polariton modes, termed gap plasmons. The spontaneous emission of an emitter placed in such a metal nanogap is expected to be strongly modified due to coupling to gap plasmons. We investigate the light emission properties of semiconductor quantum dots (QD) in a metal nanoslit, which is a truncated MDM waveguide. More specifically, we measure both the lifetime and the state of polarization of th
Momentum space topology can be exploited to manipulate radiation in real space. Here we demonstrate topological control of 2D perovskite emission in the strong coupling regime via polaritonic bound states in the continuum (BICs). Topological polarization singularities (polarization vortices and circularly polarized eigenstates) are observed at room temperature by measuring the Stokes parameters of photoluminescence in momentum space. Particularly, in symmetry-broken structures, a very large degr
Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites hold great potential for various optoelectronic devices with exceptional properties. Although the direct generation of circularly polarized emission from perovskites would enable various compact devices, achieving a large degree of circular polarization (DCP) at room temperature still remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate that DCP can be strongly enhanced at the narrow mode position of chiral Fano resonances. In our design, a perovskite film is spin-coa
Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a new paradigm in customized manufacturing and allows the fabrication of complex structures that are difficult to realize with other conventional methods. Four-dimensional (4D) printing adds active, responsive functions to 3D-printed components, which can respond to various environmental stimuli. This review introduces recent ideas in 3D and 4D printing of mechanical multistable structures. Three-dimensional printing of multistable structures can enable highly
Abstract Bound states in the continuum (BICs) or trapped modes can provide an important new avenue for strong light confinement via destructive interference. Dielectric photonic structures have been extensively studied for optical BICs. However, BICs in plasmonic nanostructures have not been explored much yet. Herein, we present a thorough experimental study of plasmonic BICs via Fourier‐plane spectroscopy and imaging. Optical mode dispersion in a metal grating covered by a dielectric layer is d
We utilize the unique dispersion properties of leaky plasmon polaritons in epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) thin films to demonstrate thermal radiation control. Owing to its highly flat dispersion above the light line, a thermally excited leaky wave at the ENZ frequency out-couples into free space without any scattering structures, resulting in a narrowband, wide-angle, p-polarized thermal emission spectrum. We demonstrate this idea by measuring angle- and polarization-resolved thermal emission spectra f
Chiral light sources realized in ultracompact device platforms are highly desirable for various applications. Among active media used for thin-film emission devices, lead-halide perovskites have been extensively studied for photoluminescence due to their exceptional properties. However, up to date, there have been no demonstrations of chiral electroluminescence with a substantial degree of circular polarization (DCP) based on perovskite materials, being critical for the development of practical
