Professor Young Joon Seo's research lab specializes in auditory and vestibular disorders, with a focus on the pathophysiology of hearing impairment in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and obstructive sleep apnea-hypoxia (OSAS). The lab investigates mitochondrial dysfunction as a potential mechanism linking systemic diseases to hearing loss, and develops advanced animal models—particularly for Meniere’s disease and endolymphatic hydrops—to study disease mechanisms and test novel therapeutic strategies. The lab also pioneers clinical applications of bone-conduction auditory brainstem response (BC-ABR) and image-guided surgical techniques for hearing implant systems.
Figures are computed from collected data and may differ slightly.
The odds of hearing impairment were greater with lower eGFR than with normal eGFR. Individuals with CKD were more likely to also have hearing impairment. We recommend screening the hearing of patients with CKD to provide earlier identification of hearing impairment and earlier intervention, thereby preventing progression of hearing impairment and providing appropriate treatment strategies.
This study using CIH mice as a model for OSAS provides evidence of an association between OSAS and auditory function alteration, as well as of mitochondria being part of the pathophysiology of hearing impairment. Further investigation is required to determine whether mitochondria could serve as a valid target for preventive or therapeutic purposes.
Several novel animal models that represent the pathophysiological process of endolymphatic hydrops (ELH) of Meniere's disease (MD) have been developed. Animal models are important to identify and characterize the pathophysiology of ELH and to corroborate molecular and genetic findings in humans. This review of the current animal models will be useful in understanding the pathophysiology of and developing proper treatments for MD. Surgical animal models will be replaced by medication-induced anim

Auditory brainstem responses (ABR) have been used as a powerful and the most common objective tool to evaluate hearing sensitivity and to diagnose the types of hearing loss and neurological disorders, through the auditory peripheral pathway to a central level of the brainstem, since 1971. Although bone-conduction (BC) ABR could be an alternative to air-conduction (AC) ABR, as the former overcomes some limitations of the latter, the majority of clinicians rarely utilize it due to a lack of knowle
Using an image-guided surgical navigation system to aid in the placement of the BC-FMT on the simulated location is a simple procedure and is more effective that finding the exact coordinates. It also shortens the decision time for applying the implant.
In the mouse model for ototoxicity, the serum levels of circulating miR-205 peaked on day 3 and were sustained from days 7⁻14. Furthermore, miR-205 expression was highly expressed in the organ of Corti at day 5, continued to be expressed in the modiolus at high levels until day 14, and was finally also in the stria vascularis. The serum miR-205 in the AKI mice did not change significantly compared to the normal group. Conclusions Circulating miR-205 from the cochlea, after ototoxic damage, migra
Using methods combining the evaluation of miR-183, miR-210, miR-18b, and miR-23a cut-off values identified in ISSNHL patients and healthy controls during receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, sensitivity and specificity of 80.95% (17/21) and 87.50% (21/24) were obtained, respectively.
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), the most common vestibular disorder, is diagnosed by an examiner changing the posture of the examinee and inducing nystagmus. Among the diagnostic methods used to observe nystagmus, video-nystagmography has been widely used recently because it is non-invasive. A specialist with professional knowledge and training in vertigo diagnosis is needed to diagnose BPPV accurately, but the ratio of vertigo patients to specialists is too high, thus necessitating
The results indicate that the MEI may be as beneficial as the CI in relieving tinnitus in subjects with unilateral tinnitus accompanying hearing loss. Furthermore, this improvement may manifest as hearing restoration or habituation rather than a direct electrical nerve stimulation, which was previously considered as the main mechanism underlying tinnitus suppression by auditory implants.
