Professor Youn-Hee Lim's research lab focuses on the health impacts of environmental exposures, particularly air pollution and chemical contaminants, during critical developmental periods such as early childhood and old age. The lab investigates the associations between ultrafine particles, criteria air pollutants (e.g., PM10, NO2, O3), and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) with mental health outcomes, including depressive symptoms and ADHD. Using longitudinal cohort studies with biomonitoring and environmental monitoring, the lab aims to identify vulnerable populations and inform public health policies. Their work bridges environmental epidemiology, toxicology, and population health.

Our study suggests that increases in PM10, NO2, and O3 may increase depressive symptoms among the elderly. Of the symptoms evaluated, ambient air pollution was most strongly associated with emotional symptoms.
There is evidence that exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms.
