宇井康介教授の研究室は、熱帯・亜寒帯における大気循環と海洋の相互作用に注目し、特にサハラ=ジャパン(PJ)パターンをはじめとする大気・海洋連携メカニズムの解明を主眼としています。特に、熱帯西太平洋の対流活動が東アジアに及ぼす季節的気候変動の予測可能性や、大気波動・境界層効果・海温フィードバックの役割を数値モデルと観測データを融合して解明しています。その成果として、気候変動のメカニズム解明と長期予測の精度向上に貢献しています。
