The clinico-pathological findings of 26 cases of presenile dementia with motor neuron disease in Japan are reviewed. The characteristic features include: (1) Progressive dementia with slowly progressive onset in the presenile period. (2) Neurogenic muscular wasting during the course of illness. (3) A duration of illness to death of from one to three years. (4) Absence of extrapyramidal symptoms and definite sensory deficits. (5) No characteristic abnormalities in the CSF or EEG. (6) No known par
Evidence of cerebrovascular disease at autopsy was compared in 2 groups of men: 186 long-time residents of Hiroshima, Japan, and 253 men of Japanese ancestry long resident in Honolulu, Hawaii. They were 45 to 71 years-of-age at death. Atherosclerosis of the circle of Willis and its major branches, sclerosis of the intraparenchymal arteries and the frequency of cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral infarct were compared in the 2 populations. The Honolulu subjects had significantly more atherosclerosis
We evaluated the peripheral blood immune responses of lymphocytes in severe Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in different stages of recovery using single-cell mass cytometry. The patients with prolonged hospitalization did not show recovery of B lymphocyte counts and CD4-positive T lymphocyte counts but did show abundant CD8-positive T lymphocytes. CD4 and CD8 T cells expressing high levels of T-bet and Granzyme B were more abundant in post-recovery patients. This study showed that c
Septic patients with severe hypoglycemia had significantly higher mortality compared with patients with euglycemia.
Splenic volume appeared to be an independent predictor of poor prognosis.
miRNAs regulated the PD-1 and PD-L1 cancer immunotherapy pathway and Th2 pathway through miRNA interference action of mRNA. Integrated analysis of mRNAs and miRNAs showed that T cells were dysfunctional in ARDS patients.
Patients recovering from severe COVID-19 showed persistence of cytotoxic lymphocytes, NK cells, and regulatory T cells throughout the posthospitalization year of recovery.
We found that the use of HFNC during tracheal intubation was potentially associated with a higher lowest SpO2 during the procedure in comparison to conventional oxygen administration in non-trauma patients in the ED.
We showed the sensitivity of CE-CT scanning to detect arterial extravasation in patients with postpartum haemorrhage to be 100%.
The proteomics of plasma and BALF from patients with ARDS were compared in both the acute and subacute phases. In BALF in the acute phase, humoral immunity, mainly B-cell receptor signaling, was activated, whereas the HSP90 cycle and protein folding mechanisms were inactivated.
Cross-sectional X-CT and 123I-IMP-SPECT studies comparing patients with presenile dementia with motor neuron disease (52-year-old, female), with Alzheimer's disease (51-year-old, male) and Pick's disease (49-year-old, male), have found a pattern of reductions in regional cerebral blood flow; the most severe reductions have been in fronto-temporal regions in cases of Pick's disease and presenile dementia with motor neuron disease. 123I-IMP-SPECT in a patient with presenile dementia with motor neu
