Professor Yun Mi Yu's research lab specializes in pharmacoepidemiology and clinical pharmacology, with a focus on drug safety, adverse drug reactions (ADRs), and the long-term neurological and cognitive effects of chronic medications. The lab investigates the impact of cardiovascular and metabolic drugs—such as RAS inhibitors, SGLT-2 inhibitors, and linezolid—on neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, particularly in relation to blood-brain barrier penetration and treatment duration. A key research direction involves identifying predictive factors for drug-induced complications, including thrombocytopenia and cognitive decline, using large-scale healthcare claims and electronic medical record data. The lab also explores the safety profiles of opioid-gabapentinoid combinations and the potential disease-modifying effects of repurposed drugs in aging and chronic disease populations.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the association between the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors and dementia onset as well as cognitive function in patients with diabetes mellitus. We comprehensively searched the MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL databases to select relevant studies published up to August 2023. Findings from our study showed around one in three CPs had ADR reporting experience in Korea, while 87.1% had prior experience with ADR cases. The knowledge of SR, prior experience of ADR, and less concern about the obstacles to SR were contributing factors for reporting levels.
Findings of this study highlight the need for increasing the awareness of the SR system among consumers and empowering them to report ADRs by themselves, which would ultimately improve the drug-safety environment.
