15Head growth trajectory during neonatal intensive care unit stay is associated with neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm SGA infants. If head growth catch-up is achieved by four months CA and length and weight catch-up by nine months CA, preterm SGA infants are predicted to have optimal neurodevelopment at 18 months CA.
Increased survival in the very preterm population results in a higher risk of developing neurodevelopmental and behavioral disabilities among survivors. We examined the outcomes of very preterm infants and parents after a preventive intervention program of four home visits by a specialized nurse, 5 days, 2 weeks, and 1 month after discharge, respectively, and at CA 2 months, followed by up to 12 times of group sessions between CA 3 and 6 months. Our multicenter randomized controlled trial assess
This cohort study suggests that the forceps major of the corpus callosum and the superior parietal lobule were vulnerable regions in preterm infants. Preterm birth and suboptimal postnatal growth could have negative associations with brain maturation, including altered microstructure and functional connectivity. Postnatal growth may be associated with differences in long-term neurodevelopment among children born preterm.
Predicting developmental outcomes with growth measurement would be beneficial for primary healthcare or in developing countries with low medical resources. This study aimed to identify physical growth measures that indicate neurodevelopment in very preterm infants. Preterm infants, born at <32 weeks' gestation or weighing <1500 g, were included. We calculated the changes in z-score of weight, length, and head circumference (HC) at different time points: birth, postmenstrual age (PMA) 35 weeks, a
Spontaneous intestinal perforation (SIP) and surgical necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) are intestinal conditions requiring surgical intervention in preterm infants. We aimed to compare the head growth and neurodevelopment of preterm infants with SIP and surgical NEC. A retrospective single-center study was performed in preterm infants born at less than 32 weeks of gestation and who had undergone surgery for NEC or SIP. Data from the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development 3rd Edition (Bay

Heat shock pretreatment reduced the incidence and severity of early experimental NEC in rats. A possible mechanism underlying this protective effect includes inhibition of NF-ĸB activation through increased HSP70 expression.
PMA at sepsis diagnosis might be an important risk factor for moderate-to-severe WMA in extremely premature infants with postnatal sepsis, especially before PMA 28 weeks. Infants who suffer from sepsis before PMA 28 weeks might need additional therapy for neuroprotection.
Intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP) is released from mature enterocytes when cell membrane integrity is disrupted. This study aimed to prospectively investigate the physiologic significance of early urinary I-FABP and whether it might reflect intestinal compromise in preterm infants. We conducted a prospective cohort study of 100 preterm infants weighing <1250 g and collected serial urine samples at 12, 24, and 48 h after birth. The correlations between initial urinary I-FABP/urinary
To produce milk, four secretory processes are synchronized in the alveolar cell of the mature, functional mammary gland: (1) exocytosis, (2) fat synthesis and secretion, (3) secretion of ions and water, and (4) transcytosis of immunoglubulins and other substances from the interstitial space. Milk is synthesized continuously into the alveolar lumen, where it is stored until milk removal from the breast is initiated. Prolactin mediates the central nervous system regulation of milk secretion, but i
