Despite awareness in social work and related literatures that sociocultural power dynamics are reproduced in practice, there is little research on how whiteness manifests as an oppressive discourse in clinical settings. This article analyzes audio-recorded therapy sessions between white therapists and racialized immigrant clients from an urban community mental health center in Canada to explore the ways in which whiteness shapes clinical encounters. Using poststructural theories of discourse and
A retail store space in luxury fashion functions as a critical marketing point communicating the brand’s intended image. This study explores the symbolic effect of aesthetic factors of retail atmosphere in luxury, focusing on the impact of perceived luxury of interior colors in retail atmosphere on perceived store luxury, consumer emotion, and preference. A total of 218 U.S. consumers participated in an online survey, employing a hypothetical store image reflecting a high- or low-luxury retail a
Assessment of left ventricular diastolic function plays a major role in the diagnosis and prognosis of cardiac diseases, including heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. We aimed to develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled electrocardiogram (ECG) model to identify echocardiographically determined diastolic dysfunction and increased filling pressure. We trained, validated, and tested an AI-enabled ECG in 98,736, 21,963, and 98,763 patients, respectively, who had an ECG and echocar
Visual simulation is currently the primary technique used to optimize virtual presence in e-tailing, but it entails high costs. For e-tail companies with limited financial resources, customer-company communications, instead of using visual simulation, are based mostly on text (e.g., product attributes, company information). This study explores the influence of text-based e-tail content on virtual presence and the mechanism underlying this influence by testing (1) the effect of cue multiplicity o
Simulation-based learning (SBL) is an innovative experiential teaching method where students and instructors interact with a simulated client to foster students’ holistic competence in practice. Considering the context of North America where social workers are the largest service provider in the field of mental health, it is critical for educators to enhance competencies in students during the social work program. Guided by competency- and simulation-based, adult learning frameworks, this paper
The Istanbul guilds of the Ottoman Empire witnessed a period of profound economic and political turbulence throughout the seventeenth century. Drawing on the kadi court records of Istanbul, the author explores issues of guild organization, questions the so-called traditionalism of Ottoman guilds, and examines the ability of the guilds to negotiate with the state during times of peace, war and revolt. Not only does this study shed new light on the question of what the Ottoman guilds were and what
The purpose of this article is to develop guidelines to assist practitioners and researchers in evaluating and developing rigorous case studies. The main concern in evaluating a case study is to accurately assess its quality and ultimately to offer clients social work interventions informed by the best available evidence. To assess the quality of a case study, we propose criteria, including transferability/external validity, credibility/internal validity, confirmability/construct validity, and d
While the general belief is that the best way to predict electric load is through individualized models, the existing studies have focused on one-for-all models because the individual models are difficult to train and require a significantly larger data accumulation time per individual. In recent years, applying deep learning for forecasting electric load has become an important research topic but still one-for-all has been the main approach. In this work, we adopt transfer learning and meta lea
Epistemic and social injustice occurs when therapists implicitly and explicitly impose personal, professional, and institutional power onto clients, and dismiss client experience which is embedded in cultural identity and social location. Despite research evidence highlighting the positive impact of broaching in cross-cultural psychotherapy, questioning the rationale and barriers to broaching is paramount. Drawing from scholarship on epistemic in/justice, we argue that the very existence of marg
This article proposes a revision to the construct of cultural competencies into cross-cultural competencies (CCC), to include relational and dynamic aspects from clinical social work practice. This approach moves the construct beyond a 1-person system (i.e., cultural competence as a clinicians characteristic across diverse clients) to a 2-person system that interacts between 2 cultural beings, client and clinician. Comparing the National Association of Social Workers Standards for Cultural Compe
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between snack food intakes and dental caries in 661 Korean elementary school children. After each meal, 59.6% of the surveyed children ate snack foods, in particular, they ate snack heavily after lunch. The snack food items causing dental caries contained high levels of sugar and were convenience foods, which the children had preference toward. In addition, the intake frequency of snack foods substituted for meals was greater than 54%. Ba
Purpose: Social justice is a foundational social work value, but social work education continues to experience ongoing challenges with how to teach students to embody social justice values. The aim of this scoping review is to map empirical studies on teaching methods that translate social justice value into teachable curricula. Methods: Following Arksey and O’Malley’s scoping review framework, we conducted a rigorous process in which we screened 5953 studies and included a final sample of 35 st
