This book explores how a modern English literary identity was forged by its notions of other traditions and histories, in particular those of China. The theorizing and writing of English literary modernity took place in the midst of the famous quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns. Eun Kyung Min argues that this quarrel was in part a debate about the value of Chinese culture and that a complex cultural awareness of China shaped the development of a 'national' literature in seventeenth- an
The two most dominant twentieth-century theorizations about the exchange of daughters are Freudian psychoanalysis, which theorizes the psychic, libidinal exchange performed <unl>by</unl> the daughter of the mother for the father, and Lévi-Straussian anthropology, which theorizes the exchange <unl>of</unl> the daughter by her brothers and fathers through marriage. In both theories, the daughter's exchange is a founding moment in the institution of culture. In this essay, I
Thomas Percy's collection Reliques of Ancient English Poetry (1765) is widely recognized as one of the most important antiquarian publications of the mid-eighteenth century. Percy's pivotal role in revising how the British conceived of their national literary past, however, seldom has been critically linked to his contributions to popularizing Chinese literature in England. This essay proposes that Percy's Chinese books functioned as an important preparative for his theorization of a nonclassica
Drawing on Thomas Hobbes's distinction between contract and gift, as well as Hannah Arendt's discussion of promise and forgiveness, this essay argues that Elizabeth Inchbald's A Simple Story should be read as a complex moral fable about making contracts and giving promises in spheres neglected by social contract theory: the spheres of sexual love and difference, marriage, parenthood, and inter-generation bonds. The novel shifts our moral attention away from the contract to the promise and its al
Recent critics of Wollstonecraft have protested that she was not feminist enough in promoting womens duties as mothers, that her work shows a bourgeois bias, that she was not able to transcend the discourse of female sensibility. In order to evaluate Wollstonecrafts achievement properly, however, we need to examine her place in the history of early modern European political thought, as well as to recognize changes and developments in her work. This paper reads The Wrongs of Woman: or, Maria, in
Historians of seventeenth-century Quarrel between Ancients and Moderns have recently shown how, from beginning, it was not limited to questions of literary value but was tied up with changing notions of progressive history, historiography, philology, humanism, science, and reading culture.1 One line of inquiry that has been surprisingly neglected, however, is role that Asia played in this debate about European identity. Although many have observed that discovery of new lands coincided with philo
This paper interrogates the formation and the representation of the English-speaking subject in modern Korea. Who speaks English in modern Korea and why? The paper offers a literary-historical sketch of representative modern Korean subjects in both Korean and Korean American literature. These subjects, I suggest, open up a troubled history of Korean imaginaries of the English language. Whereas English first appears as a marker of colonial modernity, class privilege, and social striving in early
This essay reads the short romances of Margaret Cavendish and Aphra Behn as complex responses to contract-based theories of obligation and the model of the political subject who enters into relationships of willing submission. Cavendish and Behn take up the subject of women’s contracts and obligations within the generic constraints of romance, but their romances belie the fiction of women freely and happily contracting with their romance heroes. Far from instancing willing submission, Cavendish’
The aim of this essay is to situate the travelogue of Pak Chiwŏn in the context of the new Qing history and the recent interest in Chengde studies. Most studies of Pak Chiwŏn situate him in the Korean tradition of yŏnhaeng 燕行—literally, “journey to Beijing.” This essay begins by noting, quite simply, that the specific achievement and significance of Yŏrha ilgi needs to be framed in terms of its necessary departure from the generic expectations and constraints of yŏnhaengnok. Pak intended to go t
