15This paper empirically traces out the impacts of corruption on government revenue. The total amount of government revenue decreases as corruption reduces tax revenues if it contributes to tax evasion, improper tax exemptions or weak tax administration. In addition, corruption may distort the composition of government revenue: that is, a country with a higher level of corruption increases the proportion of international tax revenue rather than domestic tax one as the source of government revenue.
This paper examines whether governance quality affects public sector efficiency in the policy areas of administration, education, infrastructure, and stability. Using cross-country evidence, we find that a country's measures of governance quality are positively and significantly associated with public sector efficiency in the policy areas of administration, infrastructure, and stability. However, regression results suggest that a country's governance quality cannot affect efficiency in the polic
AbstarctThis paper examines the relationship among women's employment, fertility, and economic growth using two regional panel data, those of 8 East Asian and 15 EU countries over the period 1980–2008. We use a panel structural vector autoregression model and estimate the variance decomposition. The endogeneity among women's employment, fertility, and growth is considerably reduced when we use the samples of East Asian and the EU countries rather than a specific country. In addition, we find tha
This article investigates the role of financial market development on business cycle volatility in the economy of Korea, using time-series data for the period 1967 to 2010. The financial market development and business cycle volatility are measured by three different variables of financial deepening and a moving-average SD of real GDP, respectively. We construct a long-run causality index, as suggested by Granger and Lin (1995), in the context of cointegrated systems and vector error correction
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to estimate the impacts of women's education on the mean age of women at first birth (denoting the timing of fertility) and total fertility rate (TFR, denoting the level of fertility) using cross-country panel data. Design/methodology/approach – The estimations proceed in two steps: first, the timing and level of fertility regressions are separately estimated, and second, two regressions are estimated at the same time as a form of a system equation to accom
As premed is a preliminary course before studying medicine, premedical curriculum should reflect the needs of those parties concerned-society, professors, students, etc.- and be based on core values and educational philosophy of the school in order to derive its competences.
There is increasing recognition that corruption has an adverse influence on growth as it distorts both market economy and democracy. However, the existing literature has failed to address countries' characteristics as far as the process of sample selection is concerned. This paper empirically reexamines the relationship between corruption and growth after dividing the data into two subsamples based on the Index of Ethnic Fractionalization (IEF). Using cross-national evidence, corruption is shown
This study examines whether income distribution affects school enrolment at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Using cross-national evidence, it is found that a country's income inequality is positively and significantly associated with primary school enrolments. However, there is a negative association between income inequality and enrolment at both secondary and tertiary levels, even after controlling for some explanatory variables.
The research investigates consumer behavior within e-commerce, focusing on the factors influencing online purchasing decisions and strategies to enhance customer engagement and loyalty. The study explores psychological, social, and technological elements that shape online behaviors, including personalization, trust-building mechanisms, and user experience optimization. Employing a mixed-methods approach, it examines how e-commerce businesses leverage data analytics, marketing strategies, and cus
The objective of this study is to enhance comprehension of the gig economy, its ramifications, and its significance for labor market dynamics and public policy. This research offers practical insights for different stakeholders, such as politicians, enterprises, and workers, in effectively addressing the obstacles and capitalizing on the opportunities posed by the gig economy, utilizing a rigorous quantitative analysis approach. The study employs a quantitative research design, which entails the
This study provides a theoretical background for collusion‐induced overlending being the main cause of the 1997 Korean financial crisis. Our model consists of a lending institution, a borrowing chaebol of an unknown type, and an informed politician who can influence lending decision. We show that collusion can be formed between a low‐type chaebol and the politician, and it may not be the lending institution’s best interest to deter such collusion. This equilibrium, however, is possible only when
