15Get the lead out: The title fluorescence receptor exhibits a high affinity and selectivity for Pb(2+) over competing metal ions in water (see picture) with an overall emission change of approximately 8-fold at the emission maximum for Pb(2+). The fluorescence receptor can remove 96 % of 100 ppb Pb(2+) from human blood, and can be useful and effective for the selective and rapid removal of Pb(2+) in vivo.
A new fluoro-chromogenic chemosensor based on BODIPY-functionalized gold nanoparticles 1 is prepared. Addition of Cu(2+) ions to aqueous solutions of 1 gave an instantaneous color change along with a blue-shift of the absorption band and quenching of the emission spectrum at room temperature. The chemosensor 1 exhibits a high affinity and selectivity for Cu(2+) over competing metal ions tested. Moreover, confocal microscopy experiments establish that 1 can be used for detecting Cu(2+) levels wit
We have studied the neutron-transfer reactions $^{11,12}\mathrm{B}$($d,p$)$^{12,13}\mathrm{B}$ in inverse kinematics to obtain information about the neutron-capture reactions $^{11,12}\mathrm{B}$($n,\ensuremath{\gamma}$). These capture reactions are suggested to play a role in seeding $r$-process nucleosynthesis through the production of light, neutron-rich nuclei. The neutron spectroscopic factors of the states in $^{12,13}\mathrm{B}$ were deduced and the branching ratio of the neutron-unbound
The breakout reaction $^{15}\mathrm{O}(\ensuremath{\alpha},\ensuremath{\gamma})^{19}\mathrm{Ne}$ from the hot CNO cycle is critical to understanding explosive astrophysical phenomena such as x-ray bursts. In spite of considerable past experimental effort via indirect methods, this reaction rate remained mostly uncertain until our recent measurement [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 242503 (2007)] of the eluding $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-decay branching ratios of the near-threshold states in $^{19}\mathrm{Ne}$,
In April 2012, the former ICC Prosecutor Ocampo rejected Palestine’s declaration for accepting ICC jurisdiction. The prosecutor decided that only a “state” is eligible to accept ICC jurisdiction and Palestine was not a “state” according to the UN General Assembly. So after the UN General Assembly recognized the State of Palestine seven months later, Palestine, now eligible to accept ICC jurisdiction, resubmitted its declaration and acceded to the ICC Statute in early 2015. Incumbent Prosecutor B
Importance of studying the 16O(n,α) reaction is motivated by multiple nuclear applications. The Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) produces a white neutron spectrum ranging from thermal to several hundreds of MeV energies. We have recently developed the LENZ (Low Energy NZ-neutron induced charged particle detection) capability to measure high-precision (n,α) cross sections. In order to provide more reliable data, we have enhanced solid angle coverage, and improved signal-to-noise ratios
[Purpose] In patients with cerebral palsy (CP), performance of the sit-to-stand (STS) task is influenced by an asymmetrical motor pattern. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of an elevated chair on STS performance in patients with CP. [Subjects and Methods] Nine CP patients performed STS from a height-adjustable instrumented chair at their natural speed, with the ankle at a 90° angle to the floor. The center-of-pressure (COP) displacement was recorded under the feet. Each foot
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that influenced health related quality of life in women with disabilities. The other purpose was to examine the correlations of activities of these women's daily life, self esteem, and health promoting behavior with health related quality of life. Method: The subjects consisted of120 adult disabled women. Data was collected from February to June2004 using structured questionnaires. Spearman's correlation, and multiple regression w
In this paper, we propose a Science subject program based on programming learning to improve computational thinking ability in middle school. As the necessity of software education rises recently, the subject of information was designated as the mandatory subject in elementary, middle and high schools. In order to cultivate the ability that enables the leaners to search the knowledge in need by themselves and raise troubleshooting method, not the existing indoctrination, his thesis was willing t
The importance of studying the $^{16}\mathrm{O}(n,\ensuremath{\alpha})$ reaction is motivated by multiple nuclear applications which rely on an accurate nuclear reaction data library for oxygen. Discrepancies between past experimental data on the $^{16}\mathrm{O}(n,\ensuremath{\alpha})^{13}\mathrm{C}$ reaction and its time-reverse $^{13}\mathrm{C}(\ensuremath{\alpha},n)^{16}\mathrm{O}$ reaction have led to various different nuclear data evaluations. We have measured $^{16}\mathrm{O}(n,\ensuremat
