15This paper examines a psychological and behavioral characteristic of North Korean refugees living in South Korea and its implications for their social adjustment in the South. South Koreans working closely with refugees from the North commonly point out marked emotionality among them, while new comers complain of difficulties in social communication with existing residents. North Korean refugees themselves acknowledge their emotional style as different from the dominant one in the South Korean s
Abstract In this special issue, we examine how globalizing forces reshape the self among South Koreans in educational contexts. To address facets of and issues raised by what we call “psychocultural globalization,” we take as the central problematic the tension between individuality and relationality in both self‐organization and self‐other relationships in various educational settings in a globalizing South Korea. A focal concern shared in the five articles is: How are competing educational ide
In this article, I am concerned with the dynamics of self among North Koreans, in conjunction with their predicament of being under constant surveillance. To the outside world, the public behavior of North Koreans counts as one of the most puzzling aspects of the reclusive state, while many observers of North Korea point to a “real face” or “pure heart” behind the theatrical “public face” among North Koreans. Based on ethnographic interviews with visitors to North Korea and North Korean refugees
Abstract This article, based on interviews with teachers and classroom observations, examines the contour of the educational reform for individualization over twenty years in South Korean schooling. By way of an educational metaphor implicated in shifting dynamics between two competing yet complementary cultural models of sociality and human development, I attempt a historically nuanced analysis of an interdependence orientation manifest in South Korean schooling. In so doing, I closely attend t
Abstract In this article I explore the psychocultural underpinnings of authenticity as a signature feature of late modernity. I examine the self‐narratives of baby boomers in the United States, the generation that came of age under emerging postmodern conditions. The data point to shared emotional dynamics that not only provide a culture of authenticity with a strong motivational foundation but also inform the subjective experiences of modern rationality. The baby boomers, from their own bodily
In this article, I am concerned with the religious nature of North Korean statehood and the religiosity of the people, as exemplified by North Korea’s hallmark mass gymnastics show, the Arirang Festival. As a ritual occasion of the highest import in Jucheism, the Festival displays the topography of statehood and shapes the mind-heart of the people through the extraordinary bodily discipline of the supposed disciples of Jucheism. By relying on video footage as well as film and other narratives ab
I am located in Seoul, South Korea. The country has been managing the pandemic to the extent that we have not gone into a lockdown situation. Yet, with extended social distancing followed by a recent upsurge during the winter, many people, those in small businesses in particular, are expressing discontent about the government's measures to control the spread of the virus. It hasn't affected me much, except that I had to teach online through Zoom. My classes were relatively small (under twenty),
