15Background: Measurement of the cardiac chamber is essential, and current guidelines recommend measuring and reportingvalues for both sides of the cardiac chamber during echocardiographic evaluation. Normal echocardiographic reference values havebeen suggested previously, but detailed information about right-sided chambers and values according to gender was not included. Methods: This is a prospective multicenter (23 centers) study evaluating normal Korean adult subjects using comprehensiveechoca
To evaluate the influence of papillary muscles and trabeculae on left ventricular (LV) cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) analysis using three methods of cavity delineation (classic or modified inclusion methods, and the exclusion method) in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). This retrospective study included 20 consecutive HCM patients who underwent 1.5-T CMR imaging with short-axis cine stacks of the entire LV. LV measurements were performed using three different methods of
Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is now widely used in several fields of cardiovascular disease assessment due to recent technical developments. CMR can give physicians information that cannot be found with other imaging modalities. However, there is no guideline which is suitable for Korean people for the use of CMR. Therefore, we have prepared a Korean guideline for the appropriate utilization of CMR to guide Korean physicians, imaging specialists, medical associates and patients to im

Background and Objectives: The aims of this study were to establish a reliable model of chronic mitral regurgitation (MR) in rats and verify the pathophysiological features of this model by evaluating cardiac function using serial echocardiography and a pressure-volume analysis. Materials and Methods : MR was created in 37 Sprague-Dawley rats by making a hole with a 23 gauge needle on the mitral leaflet through the left ventricular (LV) apex under the guidance of transesophageal echocardiography
Background: It is important to understand the distribution of 2-dimensional strain values in normal population. We performeda multicenter trial to measure normal echocardiographic values in the Korean population. Methods: This was a substudy of the Normal echOcardiogRaphic Measurements in KoreAn popuLation (NORMAL) study. Echocardiographic specialists measured frequently used echocardiographic indices in healthy people according to a standardizedmethod at 23 different university hospitals. The s
Stress-induced cardiomyopathy is characterized by reversible systolic dysfunction of the ventricles, usually involving the apical segments. It occurs more commonly in women and is frequently precipitated by emotional or physical stressors. Ever since the first report of typical stress-induced cardiomyopathy-usually known as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy or transient left ventricular apical ballooning syndrome-was issued, variant forms of stress-induced cardiomyopathy have been reported. We describe a
Background and Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate 1) the beneficial effect of bosentan treatment (125 mg twice daily) on exercise capacity and echocardiographic variables and 2) the profiles and frequency of adverse events in Korean patients with World Health Organization (WHO) class III or IV pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH). Subjects and Methods: Twelve patients who received bosentan treatment were investigated in an open label manner. One patient was excluded in the f
Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) has long been neglected based on the false belief that it is substantially rare in prevalence and is not so important in determining prognosis. Recent consecutive publications refuted this concept surrounding TR, and now we are contemplating this entity from different point of view. In this review, we mainly focus on isolated form of severe TR. In our daily clinical practice, however, patients with problems in more than one valve are more frequently encountered. Henc
Background and Objectives: Primary prevention of coronary artery disease (CAD) has become a public health issue, according to increasing awareness of the substantial risks posed by asymptomatic atherosclerosis. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence and characteristics of subclinical CAD using coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), and to evaluate the role of this advanced technology in identifying subclinical CAD in asymptomatic Korean individuals, compared with conven
An anomalous origin of the coronary artery is an infrequent but significant cause of myocardial ischemia andsudden death. A left coronary artery arising from the right sinus of Valsalva is of clinical value due to its possibleassociation with sudden cardiac death, particularly when it courses between the aorta and pulmonary trunks.Nevertheless, it is amenable to appropriate surgical intervention, thereby emphasizing the importance of clinicalsuspicion and timely identification. We report the cas
We herein report a rare case of subaortic stenosis in association with a previous tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) surgical repair, which was not taken into account as a differential diagnosis. Echocardiography plays a pivotal role in identification of this rare combination. Therefore, echocardiography should be performed periodically during follow-up of patients with surgically corrected TOF. Given the clinical complications that can result from subaortic stenosis (i.e.,aortic regurgitation and infect
Background: Aortic stenosis (AS) is increasingly diagnosed in current aging society. Echocardiography is the most important tool in the assessment of AS and its severity. However, load-dependency of Doppler measurement could affect the accuracy of AS severity assessment. We tried to evaluate the impact of afterload on the assessment of AS severity by modification of afterload using pneumatic compression (Pcom). Methods: Forty patients diagnosed as moderate or severe AS [effective orifice area of
Background: Hemodynamic and functional evaluation with Doppler and tissue Doppler study as a part of comprehensiveechocardiography is essential but normal reference values have never been reported from Korean normal population especially accordingto age and sex. Methods: Using Normal echOcaRdiographic Measurements in a KoreAn popuLation study subjects, we obtained normal referencevalues for Doppler and tissue Doppler echocardiography including tricuspid annular velocities according to current gu
Background: We sought to assess echocardiographic predictors of left ventricular (LV) adverse remodeling after successfully reperfused acute ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). LV remodeling is commonly found in STEMI patients and it may suggest adverse outcome in acute myocardial infarction. We sought to identify whether 2D strain and torsion be independent parameters for prediction of LV adverse remodeling. Methods: We investigated 208 patients with low-risk STEMI patients who had foll
