15Compared with DN, NDRD was associated with better renal outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes, as evidenced by a higher cumulative renal survival rate and lower rate of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Shorter duration of diabetes and absence of retinopathy were independent predictors of NDRD in patients with type 2 diabetes and renal involvement. Renal biopsy is recommended for patients with type 2 diabetes and risk factors for NDRD, to obtain an accurate diagnosis, prompt initiation of dise
TNF-α inhibitor treatment strikingly increases the risk of TB infection in an IBD population from a TB endemic area. Continuous evaluation of the development of de novo TB infection in IBD patients subjected to long-term TNF inhibitor therapy is mandatory.
The aims of this study were to assess the risk of tuberculosis (TB) and the status of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in Korean patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) receiving tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α blockers. We reviewed medical records of 525 Korean IBD patients (365 TNF-α blocker naïve and 160 TNF-α blocker exposed) between January 2001 and December 2013. The crude incidence of TB was significantly higher in IBD patients receiving TNF-α blockers compared to TNF-α-blocker-n
In many Asian countries battling with the double burden of increasing noninfectious diseases on top of infectious diseases, multiple myeloma (MM) patients presenting with pleural effusion (PE) pose a great diagnostic challenge. Thus, we aimed to analyze the clinical features and practice patterns of such patients. This is a multicenter retrospective study of newly diagnosed MM patients between January 2011 and December 2015. Among 575 MM patients diagnosed during the study period, 80 (13.9%) tha
The mutational and epigenetic landscape of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has become increasingly well understood in recent years, informing on biological targets for precision medicine. Among the most notable findings was the recognition of mutational hot-spots in the isocitrate dehydrogenase (<i>IDH</i>) genes. In this review, we provide an overview on the <i>IDH1/2</i> mutation landscape in Korean AML patients, and compare it with available public data. We also discuss the role of <i>IDH1/2</i>
Daratumumab monotherapy showed fairly promising activity with modest tolerance in heavily treated Asian RRMM patients.
BCR-ABL translocation as a favorable prognostic factor in elderly patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in the era of potent tyrosine kinase inhibitors
Extramedullary multiple myeloma (EMD) is an aggressive subentity of multiple myeloma (MM) with poor prognosis. As more innovative therapeutic approaches are needed for the treatment of MM with EMD, we conducted this multicenter, non-randomized phase II trial of daratumumab in combination with dexamethasone, cyclophosphamide, etoposide and cisplatin (DARA-DCEP). A total of 32 patients (median age 59, range 35-73) were treated with DARA-DCEP. Based on the best response during the study, the comple
Our study confirmed that BUMEL is an effective and well-tolerated alternative to HDMEL conditioning, with better PFS.
Our study supports the use of a front-line quadruplet induction regimen containing a CD38 monoclonal antibody for transplant-eligible patients with newly diagnosed MM.
Here, we describe our experience with secondary neurolymphomatosis (NL) in non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients, with the emphasis on the diagnosis process. A retrospective chart review of 12 patients from 3 tertiary academic centers between January 2005 and December 2015 was conducted. Secondary NL was diagnosed within a median interval of 10 months (range 5–41 months) after initial diagnosis of NHL. Painful neuropathy was present in 66.7%, but the diagnosis of NL was delayed in nine out of 12 patient
For risk-adaptive therapeutic approaches in multiple myeloma (MM) treatment, we analyzed treatment outcome according to in situ hybridization (FISH) profiles to investigate the prognostic and predictive values of structural variations in a large series of Asian population. A total of 565 newly diagnosed patients with multiple myeloma between January 2005 and June 2015 were evaluated. FISH results showed del(17p13) in 8.8% (29/331), del(13q14) in 35.5% (184/519), t(14;16) in 2.5% (8/326), t(4;14)
Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy presents a revolutionary advancement in personalized cancer treatment. During the production process, the patient's own T-cells are genetically engineered to express a synthetic receptor that binds to a tumor antigen. CAR T-cells are then expanded for clinical use and infused back into the patient's body to attack cancer cells. Although CAR T-cell therapy is considered a major breakthrough in cancer immunotherapy, it is not without limitations. In t
