Unfolded Protein Response Signaling and Metabolic Diseases
Jaemin Lee, Umut Özcan
SJR Q1FWCI 16.1Journal of Biological ChemistryOA

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a central organelle for protein biosynthesis, folding, and traffic. Perturbations in ER homeostasis create a condition termed ER stress and lead to activation of the complex signaling cascade called the unfolded protein response (UPR). Recent studies have documented that the UPR coordinates multiple signaling pathways and controls various physiologies in cells and the whole organism. Furthermore, unresolved ER stress has been implicated in a variety of metabolic

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Stress and Its Role in Pancreatic β-Cell Dysfunction and Senescence in Type 2 Diabetes

SJR Q1FWCI 22.4International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

An increased life span and accompanying nutritional affluency have led to a rapid increase in diseases associated with aging, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes, imposing a tremendous economic and health burden on society. Pancreatic β-cells are crucial for controlling glucose homeostasis by properly producing and secreting the glucose-lowering hormone insulin, and the dysfunction of β-cells determines the outcomes for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. As the native structure of insulin is forme

Intermediate Desired Value Approach for Task Transition of Robots in Kinematic Control
Jaemin Lee, Nicolas Mansard, Jaeheung Park
SJR Q1FWCI 9.7IEEE Transactions on Robotics

The task-based control framework is well established for its ability to generate complex behavior in versatile robots. When executing multiple complex tasks, continuous and stable transition among these tasks is one of the most important issues. In this paper, the problem of task transition is discussed to achieve continuous transitions between arbitrary tasks effectively. Instead of modifying the control laws, the design of intermediate desired values to be realized by existing controllers is p

The cholinesterase-like domain of thyroglobulin functions as an intramolecular chaperone
Jaemin Lee, Bruno Di Jeso, Peter Arvan
SJR Q1FWCI 5.1Journal of Clinical InvestigationOA

Thyroid hormonogenesis requires secretion of thyroglobulin, a protein comprising Cys-rich regions I, II, and III (referred to collectively as region I-II-III) followed by a cholinesterase-like (ChEL) domain. Secretion of mature thyroglobulin requires extensive folding and glycosylation in the ER. Multiple reports have linked mutations in the ChEL domain to congenital hypothyroidism in humans and rodents; these mutations block thyroglobulin from exiting the ER and induce ER stress. We report that

The Common Cellular Events in the Neurodegenerative Diseases and the Associated Role of Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress
Soo‐Jeong Kim, Doo Kyung Kim, Seho Jeong, Jaemin Lee
SJR Q1FWCI 5.3International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

Neurodegenerative diseases are inseparably linked with aging and increase as life expectancy extends. There are common dysfunctions in various cellular events shared among neurogenerative diseases, such as calcium dyshomeostasis, neuroinflammation, and age-associated decline in the autophagy-lysosome system. However, most of all, the prominent pathological feature of neurodegenerative diseases is the toxic buildup of misfolded protein aggregates and inclusion bodies accompanied by an impairment

Cellular Stress-Modulating Drugs Can Potentially Be Identified by in Silico Screening with Connectivity Map (CMap)

SJR Q1FWCI 1.9International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

Accompanied by increased life span, aging-associated diseases, such as metabolic diseases and cancers, have become serious health threats. Recent studies have documented that aging-associated diseases are caused by prolonged cellular stresses such as endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, mitochondrial stress, and oxidative stress. Thus, ameliorating cellular stresses could be an effective approach to treat aging-associated diseases and, more importantly, to prevent such diseases from happening. How

The Cholinesterase-like Domain, Essential in Thyroglobulin Trafficking for Thyroid Hormone Synthesis, Is Required for Protein Dimerization
Jaemin Lee, Xiao‐Fan Wang, Bruno Di Jeso, Peter Arvan
SJR Q1FWCI 3.0Journal of Biological ChemistryOA

The carboxyl-terminal cholinesterase-like (ChEL) domain of thyroglobulin (Tg) has been identified as critically important in Tg export from the endoplasmic reticulum. In a number of human kindreds suffering from congenital hypothyroidism, and in the cog congenital goiter mouse and rdw rat dwarf models, thyroid hormone synthesis is inhibited because of mutations in the ChEL domain that block protein export from the endoplasmic reticulum. We hypothesize that Tg forms homodimers through noncovalent

CTHRC1 promotes angiogenesis by recruiting Tie2-expressing monocytes to pancreatic tumors

CTHRC1 (collagen triple-helix repeat-containing 1), a protein secreted during the tissue-repair process, is highly expressed in several malignant tumors, including pancreatic cancer. We recently showed that CTHRC1 has an important role in the progression and metastasis of pancreatic cancer. Although CTHRC1 secretion affects tumor cells, how it promotes tumorigenesis in the context of the microenvironment is largely unknown. Here we identified a novel role of CTHRC1 as a potent endothelial activa

Extracellular vesicles from in vivo liver tissue accelerate recovery of liver necrosis induced by carbon tetrachloride

SJR Q1FWCI 2.1Journal of Extracellular VesiclesOA

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nano-sized vesicles composed of proteolipid bilayers carrying various molecular signatures of the cells. As mediators of intercellular communications, EVs have gained great attention as new therapeutic agents in the field of nanomedicine. Therefore, many studies have explored the roles of cell-derived EVs isolated from cultured hepatocytes or stem cells as inducer of liver proliferation and regeneration under various pathological circumstances. However, study inv

The Role of Attribution in Learning from Performance Feedback: Behavioral Perspective on the Choice between Alliances and Acquisitions
Jaemin Lee, Joon Mahn Lee, Ji‐Yub Kim
SJR Q1FWCI 5.4Academy of Management Journal

The causal attribution of performance has not been explicitly considered in the performance feedback literature, despite its potential value in learning from prior performance. In this study, we develop a theory concerning the attribution in learning from performance feedback and explore how the attribution of past alliance performance can influence a firm’s choice between future acquisitions and alliances. We also examine the mechanisms by which attribution manifests by exploring how three theo
