15A porous anionic metal-organic framework, bio-MOF-1, constructed using adenine as a biomolecular building block is described. The porosity of this material is evaluated, its stability in biological buffers is studied, and its potential as a material for controlled drug release is investigated. Specifically, procainamide HCl is loaded into the pores of bio-MOF-1 using a simple cation exchange process. Exogenous cations from biological buffers are shown to affect the release of the adsorbed drug m
The synthesis and structure of Co(2)(ad)(2)(CO(2)CH(3))(2) x 2 DMF x 0.5 H(2)O (bio-MOF-11) is described. Pyrimidine and amino groups of adeninate (ad) decorate the pores of the framework. The porosity of this material was studied, and its CO(2) and H(2) adsorption properties were evaluated. bio-MOF-11 exhibits a high heat of adsorption for CO(2) (approximately 45 kJ/mol), a high CO(2) capacity (approximately 6 mmol/g, 273 K), and exceptional selectivity for CO(2) over N(2) at 273 K (81:1) and 2
Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), Ln(3+)@bio-MOF-1, were synthesized via postsynthetic cation exchange of bio-MOF-1 with Tb(3+), Sm(3+), Eu(3+), or Yb(3+), and their photophysical properties were studied. We demonstrate that bio-MOF-1 encapsulates and sensitizes visible and near-infrared emitting lanthanide cations in aqueous solution.
The pore volume and BET surface area of bio-MOF-1 (a), Zn(8)(ad)(4)(BPDC)(6)O.2Me(2)NH(2), is systematically modified via postsynthetic cation exchange with either tetramethylammonium, tetraethylammonium, or tetrabutylammonium cations to yield Zn(8)(ad)(4)(BPDC)(6)O.2Me(4)N (b), Zn(8)(ad)(4)(BPDC)(6)O.2Et(4)N (c), and Zn(8)(ad)(4)(BPDC)(6)O.2Bu(4)N (d), respectively. The impact that pore volume and BET surface area have on CO(2) capacity is evaluated, and it is found that materials with intermed
The preparation and self-assembly of zinc adeninate macrocycles [Zn(6)(adeninate)(6)(pyridine)(6)(dimethylcarbamate)(6)] is described. The macrocycles self-assemble through adenine-adenine hydrogen bonding interactions into a 3-D porous crystalline material that maintains its structural integrity after removal of guest molecules and coordinated pyridine molecules. By adjusting the activation temperature prior to gas adsorption measurements, the size of the pore aperture can be modulated to affor
The overall risk of second primary TC or BC is increased in patients with prior BC or TC, respectively. The early detection of second cancer might have contributed to these findings. However, BC that coexisted with TC had a higher expression of hormone receptors, suggesting an association between the molecular pathogenesis of TC and BC.
Growing evidence shows the possibility of a role of microRNAs (miRNA) in regulating bone mass. We investigated the change of miRNAs and mRNA expression profiles in bone tissue in an ovariectomized mice model and evaluated the regulatory mechanism of bone mass mediated by miRNAs in an estrogen-deficiency state. Eight-week-old female C3H/HeJ mice underwent ovariectomy (OVX) or sham operation (Sham-op), and their femur and tibia were harvested to extract total bone RNAs after 4 weeks for microarray
It has been recently reported that a considerable portion of diabetic patients with renal insufficiency show normoalbuminuria. As little is known about normoalbuminuric renal insufficiency in the Asian population, we examined its prevalence and clinical characteristics in Korean type 2 diabetic patients. We studied 562 patients with type 2 diabetes from Seoul National University Hospital. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated by the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease
Umbilical cord blood (UCB) has recently been recognized as a new source of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for use in stem cell therapy. We studied the effects of systemic injection of human UCB-MSCs and their conditioned medium (CM) on ovariectomy (OVX)-induced bone loss in nude mice. Ten-week-old female nude mice were divided into six groups: Sham-operated mice treated with vehicle (Sham-Vehicle), OVX mice subjected to UCB-MSCs (OVX-MSC), or human dermal fibroblast (OVX-DFB) transplantation, OVX
The drug uptake and release properties of a series of biomolecule-based metal-organic frameworks (bMOF-1, bMOF-4, bMOF-100, and bMOF-102) have been studied. The bMOFs were loaded with the small molecule etilefrine hydrochloride and release profiles were collected in both Nanopure water and simulated body fluid (SBF). Each bMOF exhibited an initial burst of drug release at the initial stages of the experiment followed by a gradual release of the remaining drug molecules over time. bMOF-1 released
Porous carbon materials were synthesized by pyrolysis of zinc-based MOFs. These materials exhibited superior CO2 capacities and better CO2 separation ability under humid conditions compared to those of the pristine MOFs.
Hypothyroid patients experience fatigue-related symptoms despite adequate thyroid hormone replacement. Thyroid hormone plays an essential role in carnitine-dependent fatty acid import and oxidation. We investigated the effects of L-carnitine supplementation on fatigue in patients with hypothyroidism. In total, 60 patients (age 50.0 ± 9.2 years, 3 males, 57 females) who still experienced fatigue (fatigue severity scale [FSS] score ≥ 36) were given L-carnitine (n = 30, 990 mg L-carnitine twice dai
Our results suggest that RAS mutation analysis holds great promise as a preoperative diagnostic tool for predicting FVPTC in cytologically and sonographically indeterminate nodules negative for BRAF mutations.
