15An 8-channel scalable EEG acquisition SoC is presented to continuously detect and record patient-specific seizure onset activities from scalp EEG. The SoC integrates 8 high-dynamic range Analog Front-End (AFE) channels, a machine-learning seizure classification processor and a 64 KB SRAM. The classification processor exploits the Distributed Quad-LUT filter architecture to minimize the area while also minimizing the overhead in power × delay . The AFE employs a Chopper-Stabilized Capacitive Coup
A self-configured body sensor network controller and a high efficiency wirelessly powered sensor are presented for a wearable, continuous health monitoring system. The sensor chip harvests its power from the surrounding health monitoring band using an Adaptive Threshold Rectifier (ATR) with 54.9% efficiency, and it consumes 12 μW to implement an electrocardiogram (ECG) analog front-end and an ADC. The ATR is implemented with a standard CMOS process for low cost. The adhesive bandage type sensor
A wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) acquisition system implemented with planar-fashionable circuit board (P-FCB)-based shirt is presented. The proposed system removes cumbersome wires from conventional Holter monitor system for convenience. Dry electrodes screen-printed directly on fabric enables long-term monitoring without skin irritation. The ECG monitoring shirt exploits a monitoring chip with a group of electrodes around the body, and both the electrodes and the interconnection are implement
Recently, several attempts have been made to continuously monitor chronic diseases in everyday life, but their large form factors or battery power limitations still remain to be solved. Security and/or requirements of interference resilience are stringent for health monitoring, and therefore, using an open-air wireless ISM band [1] is not suitable for a health monitoring body sensor network (BSN). This paper presents a self-configured wearable BSN system with high efficiency wirelessly powered s
Tracking seizure activity to determine proper medication requires a small form factor, ultra-low power sensor with continuous EEG classification. Technical challenges arise from: 1) patient-to-patient variation of seizure pattern on EEG, 2) fully integrating an ultra-low power variable dynamic range instrumentation circuits with seizure detection processor, and 3) reducing communication overhead. Reference [1] extracted EEG features locally on-chip to reduce the data being transmitted, and saved
Development of neural interface and brain-machine interface (BMI) systems enables the treatment of neurological disorders including cognitive, sensory, and motor dysfunctions. While neural interfaces have steadily decreased in form factor, recent developments target pervasive implantables. Along with advances in electrodes, neural recording, and neurostimulation circuits, integration of disease biomarkers and machine learning algorithms enables real-time and on-site processing of neural activity
Three Dimensional Printing (3DP) is a very flexible Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) technology. Any starting material in the form of powder can be transformed into a green body by ink jet printing a binder into a powder bed. 3DP-deposition of a second phase through the nozzle is unique opportunity to fabricate parts with user-defined microstructure. Zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) was chosen as the first model system to demonstrate the computer derived microstructures. ZTA parts with different
A near-field coupling transceiver integrated with a fault-tolerant network switch is implemented for inter-layer and intra-layer wearable body area network. The inductive coupling transceiver employs a resonance compensator (RC) with a digitally controlled on-chip capacitor bank and a variable hysteresis Schmitt trigger to compensate dynamic and static variances of woven inductor, and it enables 10 Mbps wireless transaction with the reception energy of 1.12 pJ/b at 2.5 V supply. The network swit
An attachable ECG sensor adhesive bandage is implemented for continuous ECG monitoring system by using Planar-Fashionable Circuit Board (P-FCB) technology. The sensor patch improves convenience at low cost: it is composed of dry electrodes and an inductor directly screen printed on fabric, and the sensor chip is also directly wire bonded on fabric. The sensor patch is wirelessly powered to remove battery for safety. Dry electrodes minimize skin irritation to enable long term monitoring. The impl
Three emerging Wearable Body Sensor Networks (WBSN) using patch type sensors are examined and compared. Unique WBSN environment issues and techniques to overcome those issues are presented for continuous healthcare applications. The first is the battery powered RF patch sensor WBSN (Type 1); it maximizes user-convenience and is suitable for short-term healthcare. The second is the wirelessly powered patch sensor WBSN (Type 2); the proposed patch adopts Planar Fashionable Circuit Board (P-FCB) fo
This paper presents a dry fabric electrode and its characteristics. For long-term physiological signal monitoring, conventional wet type electrode such as an Ag/AgCl electrode may not be sufficient, because captured signal strength degrades over time as its electrolyte dehydrates. Moreover, the electrolyte may cause skin irritation over a period of time. As a complement, a dry electrode can be used. In this work, fabric-based dry electrodes are introduced. Planar-Fabric Circuit Board (P-FCB) tec
A body sensor network using human body as a communication medium is analyzed and designed to achieve both power- and energy-efficiency. An analysis of the body channel network on frequency, distance, transmitting power and received power is performed. The analysis reveals the star topology consumes
A low-energy inductive coupling link with a low energy fault-tolerant wearable body sensor network (BSN) controller is proposed to realize intra- and cross-layer wearable network at once. The intra-layer switch adopts the hybrid routing scheme to achieve fault-tolerance, and the cross-layer inductive transceiver employs the resonance compensator with an on-chip capacitor bank and a variable hysteresis Schmitt-Trigger to compensate dynamic and static variances of an woven inductor, achieving 10 M
