15In 2002, breast became the most common cancer site in Korean women. Using national breast cancer incidence data during 1993-2002, crude, age-standardized, and age-specific rates for incidence and mortality were calculated. Survival was examined for cases diagnosed during 1993-2002 and followed up to 2004. Observed survival was calculated using the life table method and relative survival using the Ederer II method. Age-standardized incidence rates in female increased from 14.5 in 1993 to 26.2 per
PRKCDBP is a proapoptotic tumor suppressor which is commonly altered in colorectal cancer by promoter hypermethylation, and its gene transcription is directly activated by NF-κB in response to TNFα. This suggests that PRKCDBP inactivation may contribute to tumor progression by reducing cellular sensitivity to TNFα and other stresses, particularly under chronic inflammatory microenvironment.
Phosphonate natural products possess a range of biological activities as a consequence of their ability to mimic phosphate esters or tetrahedral intermediates formed in enzymatic reactions involved in carboxyl group metabolism. The dianionic form of these compounds at pH 7 poses a drawback with respect to their ability to mimic carboxylates and tetrahedral intermediates. Microorganisms producing phosphonates have evolved two solutions to overcome this hurdle: biosynthesis of monoanionic phosphin
Among patients who meet criteria for diabetes within 2 years, those who are elderly, have lower premorbid BMI, weight loss, no family history of DM, need screening of pancreatic cancer.
Insulin resistance associated with Type 2 diabetes contributes to impaired vasorelaxation. Previously, we showed the phosphorylation of myosin-bound phosphatase substrate MYPT1, a marker of the vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) contraction, was negatively regulated by Akt (protein kinase B) phosphorylation in response to insulin stimulation. In this study we examined the role of Akt phosphorylation on impaired insulin-induced vasodilation in the Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rat model of Type 2 diabetes.
Nitrous oxide inhalation was preferable to injectable ketamine for pediatric patients because it is safe, allows for a faster recovery, maintains sufficient sedation time, and does not induce unnecessarily deep sedation.
Diabetes and insulin resistance are associated with an increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Recent evidence demonstrates that AT2 receptors (AT2R) play an important role in the hemodynamic control of hypertension by vasodilation. The quantitative significance of AT2R in the establishment of diabetic vascular dysfunction, however, is not well defined and needs further investigation. Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats, a polygenic model of spontaneous normotensive type 2 diabetes, were
It was reported previously that dibenzylbutyrolactone lignans from Forsythia viridissima fruits, which are traditional medicines for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, have antiinflammatory effects. In this study, the effects on the immediate-phase response (IAR) and late-phase response (LAR) following aerosolized-ovalbumin challenge in ovalbumin-sensitized guinea-pigs were evaluated by measuring the specific airway resistance (sRaw), recruitment of leukocytes and chemical mediators in the
Fe₃O₄/poly(<i>o</i>-anisidine) (POA) magnetic composite nanoparticles with their core-shell structure were synthesized by chemical oxidation polymerization technique and adopted as a magneto-responsive magnetorheological (MR) material. The chemical structure and morphology of core-shell nanoparticles were identified by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, and elemental analyzer. Pycnometer and vibrating sample magnetometer showed that the magnetic saturation and density of the Fe₃O₄/POA particles were reduced by th
The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the cockscomb pearl mussel Cristaria plicata, which is an endangered species in South Korea, was sequenced. The circle genome (15,708 bp in size) consists of 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes. There were 26 noncoding regions (NCs) found throughout the mitogenome of C. plicata, ranging in size from 2 to 327 bp, and the two largest NC regions, NC286 and NC326, were found between ND5 and tRNA(Gln) (286 bp) and between tRNA(Glu) an
