15While existing studies suggest likely benefits of home-based exercise interventions among patients with ESRD, future research is warranted to develop and test home-based physical activity interventions that address all indicators of frailty.
Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare inflammatory disease that infiltrates skeletal and extra-skeletal tissue. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Erdheim-Chester disease is usually attributed to retroperitoneal lesions that lead to urologic obstruction and hydronephrosis. In this report, we describe a patient diagnosed with Erdheim-Chester disease who eventually developed end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). After complete remission of Erdheim-Chester disease by vemurafenib therapy and 2 years of hemodial
In this preliminary study, total cfDNA levels were elevated in KT patients with COVID-19, subsiding after resolution of infection. High total cfDNA levels may confound dd-cfDNA results, leading to failure to identify rejection. Considering total cfDNA levels is important in interpretation of dd-cfDNA tests for assessment of rejection in KT patients with COVID-19 or other infection.
End-stage renal disease patients who have impaired physical function are denied for transplantation by clinicians concerned about graft/survival outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of physical function on graft/survival outcomes at 1-year post-kidney transplantation. Data were analyzed from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients regarding kidney transplantation patients (<i>N</i> = 218,657) between January 1, 2000 and September 2, 2014. The hazard ratio of 1
In recent years, there has been demand for precise estimations of pollutant loads on nationwide scale for the development of appropriate site specific (watershed specific) policies to reduce the negative impact of pollutant loads. River flow data and water quality data that were previously collected by various research institutes and universities for specific research purposes for a limited period was utilized in this study. However, only TMDL 8-day interval flow and water quality data were avai
Cardiovascular and immunological factors increase the levels of uncertainty and risk associated with transplantation. Kidney transplant programs are reluctant to risk performing transplant surgery on high risk candidates because of poor outcomes. Patients with high risk have limited access to kidney transplantation in spite of possible survival benefits of kidney transplantation. We developed four predictive models according to donor types (living donor- and deceased donor-) and transplant outco
<b>Background:</b> The long-term success rate of kidney transplantation is disappointing, with repeat transplantation necessary for more than half of recipients. When a repeat kidney transplantation is needed, patients are often elderly and suffer from underlying advanced kidney disease, comorbidities, and adverse effects of immunosuppressants, leading to physical function limitations. Limited physical function is known to hinder access to an initial kidney transplantation, but there is no infor
Background: The longevity of transplanted kidney grafts is limited, and more than half of kidney transplant patients need repeat transplants during their lifetimes. However, inequity in access to repeat kidney transplants, especially that resulting from social determinants of health, has not been studied. Methods: Using national data, this retrospective study analyzed kidney transplant recipients with failed kidney grafts (n=63,635) between October 1, 1987, and August 31, 2015, in the United Sta
As we have more preventive and treatment options for COVID-19, prompt interventions and close monitoring as demonstrated in our model may be key to achieving health outcomes including graft and patient survival. Our strategies can be applicable in instances of future outbreaks of virulent pathogens and help protect and save lives within our kidney transplant patient population.
