Electrode Materials for Rechargeable Sodium‐Ion Batteries: Potential Alternatives to Current Lithium‐Ion Batteries

SJR Q1FWCI 156.3Advanced Energy Materials

Abstract Lithium (Li)‐ion batteries (LIB) have governed the current worldwide rechargeable battery market due to their outstanding energy and power capability. In particular, the LIB's role in enabling electric vehicles (EVs) has been highlighted to replace the current oil‐driven vehicles in order to reduce the usage of oil resources and generation of CO 2 gases. Unlike Li, sodium is one of the more abundant elements on Earth and exhibits similar chemical properties to Li, indicating that Na che

New applications such as hybrid electric vehicles and power backup require rechargeable batteries that combine high energy density with high charge and discharge rate capability. Using ab initio computational modeling, we identified useful strategies to design higher rate battery electrodes and tested them on lithium nickel manganese oxide [Li(Ni(0.5)Mn(0.5))O2], a safe, inexpensive material that has been thought to have poor intrinsic rate capability. By modifying its crystal structure, we obta

LiNi x Co y Mn z O 2 (NCM, 0 ≤ x , y , z < 1) has become one of the most important cathode materials for next‐generation lithium (Li) ion batteries due to its high capacity and cost effectiveness compared with LiCoO 2 . However, the high‐voltage operation of NCM (>4.3 V) required for high capacity is inevitably accompanied by a more rapid capacity fade over numerous cycles. Here, the degradation mechanisms of LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 are investigated during cycling under various cutoff v

SJR Q1FWCI 87.8Advanced Energy Materials

Grid‐scale energy storage systems (ESSs) that can connect to sustainable energy resources have received great attention in an effort to satisfy ever‐growing energy demands. Although recent advances in Li‐ion battery (LIB) technology have increased the energy density to a level applicable to grid‐scale ESSs, the high cost of Li and transition metals have led to a search for lower‐cost battery system alternatives. Based on the abundance and accessibility of Na and its similar electrochemistry to t

SJR Q1FWCI 26.5Advanced Energy Materials

Abstract Hydrogen is a promising alternative fuel for efficient energy production and storage, with water splitting considered one of the most clean, environmentally friendly, and sustainable approaches to generate hydrogen. However, to meet industrial demands with electrolysis‐generated hydrogen, the development of a low‐cost and efficient catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical, while conventional catalysts are mostly based on precious metals. Many studies have thus focuse

SJR Q1FWCI 32.1Advanced Functional MaterialsOA

This work reports that natural graphite is capable of Na insertion and extraction with a remarkable reversibility using ether‐based electrolytes. Natural graphite (the most well‐known anode material for Li–ion batteries) has been barely studied as a suitable anode for Na rechargeable batteries due to the lack of Na intercalation capability. Herein, graphite is not only capable of Na intercalation but also exhibits outstanding performance as an anode for Na ion batteries. The graphite anode deliv

Recently, great interest has been aroused in flexible/bendable electronic equipment such as rollup displays and wearable devices. As flexible energy conversion and energy storage units with high energy and power density represent indispensable components of flexible electronics, they should be carefully considered. However, it is a great challenge to fabricate flexible/bendable power sources. This is mainly due to the lack of reliable materials that combine both electronically superior conductiv

Abstract A hybrid supercapacitor with high energy and power densities is reported. It comprises a composite anode of anatase TiO 2 and reduced graphene oxide and an activated carbon cathode in a non‐aqueous electrolyte. While intercalation compounds can provide high energy typically at the expense of power, the anatase TiO 2 nanoparticles are able to sustain both high energy and power in the hybrid supercapacitor. At a voltage range from 1.0 to 3.0 V, 42 W h kg −1 of energy is achieved at 800 W

Factors that affect Li mobility in layered lithium transition metal oxides
Kisuk Kang, Gerbrand Ceder
SJR Q1FWCI 9.6Physical Review B

The diffusion constant of Li in electrode materials is a key aspect of the rate capability of rechargeable Li batteries. The factors that affect Li mobility in layered lithium transition metal oxides are systematically studied in this paper by means of first-principles calculations. In close packed oxides octahedral ions diffuse by migrating through intermediate tetrahedral sites. Our results indicate that the activation barrier for Li hopping is strongly affected by the size of the tetrahedral

Organic rechargeable batteries, which use organics as electrodes, are excellent candidates for next-generation energy storage systems because they offer design flexibility due to the rich chemistry of organics while being eco-friendly and potentially cost efficient. However, their widespread usage is limited by intrinsic problems such as poor electronic conductivity, easy dissolution into liquid electrolytes, and low volumetric energy density. New types of organic electrode materials with variou

The development of efficient and stable water oxidation catalysts is necessary for the realization of practically viable water-splitting systems. Although extensive studies have focused on the metal-oxide catalysts, the effect of metal coordination on the catalytic ability remains still elusive. Here we select four cobalt-based phosphate catalysts with various cobalt- and phosphate-group coordination as a platform to better understand the catalytic activity of cobalt-based materials. Flexible lithium ion batteries (LIBs) have received considerable attention as a key component to enable future flexible electronic devices. A number of designs for flexible LIBs have been reported in recent years; in this article, we review recent progress. We focus on how flexibility can be introduced into each component of the LIB, including the active materials, electrolytes, separators, and current collectors. Approaches to integrating each component into a single device are described and th
