15Nitrite exerted profound neuroprotective effects with antioxidant properties in the ischemic brains. These results suggest that nitrite, as a biological storage reserve of NO, may be a novel therapeutic agent in the setting of acute stroke.
The present study shows that atorvastatin reduces the perihematomal cell death via antiinflammation, which is associated with sensorimotor recovery after experimental ICH.
Brief or prolonged seizures induce various patterns of plasticity. Axonal or dendritic remodelling and development of ectopic granule cells have been described in the hilus and molecular layer of the adult rodent hippocampus. Hippocampal cell proliferation also occurs after seizures. However, whether the seizure-induced cell proliferation plays a pathological or reparative role in the epileptic brain is unknown. In this study, we attempted to suppress the seizure-induced cell proliferation with
Circulating EMP phenotypic profiles reflect distinct phenotypes of cerebrovascular disease and are markers of vascular pathology and an increased risk for ischemic stroke.
The recent observation of room temperature photoluminescence (PL) from porous Si layers (PSLs) has received considerable attention. Bulk crystalline Si does not luminesce efficiently at room temperature due to the indirect nature of the energy bandgap minimum. The PL from PSLs has been attributed to quantum confinement effects in nanometer‐sized crystalline features found in PSLs, typically of high porosity. In this paper, we review some of the major results and discuss the controversies of subs
During the first decade of 21st century, stroke characteristics in Korea changed, likely because of increased lifespan, westernized lifestyle, and improved public awareness. Stroke experts need to cope with these distinguishing trends to establish a better strategy for prevention and acute therapy.
Cerebral aneurysm is a common cerebrovascular disease that is sometimes complicated by rupture or an enlarged mass. We are now aggressively evaluating and managing unruptured cerebral aneurysms based on a significant concern for the high morbidity and mortality related to its associated complications. However, the actual rupture rate is very low and the diagnostic and treatment modalities are expensive and invasive, which may lead to unnecessary costs and potential medical complications. This di
Moyamoya disease (MMD) is an unusual form of chronic cerebrovascular occlusive disease that involves the formation of characteristically abnormal vessels. Recent studies have reported that colony-forming unit (CFU) and outgrowth cells represent a subpopulation of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). Here, we attempted to determine the significance of CFU number and outgrowth cell yield in MMD. Endothelial progenitor cells were isolated from the blood of 24 adult MMD patients and from 48 age- and
Cerebral cavernous malformations can be progressively deteriorating. The endothelial proliferation induced by VEGF is likely to be an important aspect of the pathogenetic mechanisms of CCMs.
We have studied photoluminescence (PL) from porous Si anodized laterally along the length of the Si wafer. Broad PL peaks were observed with peak intensities at ∼640 to 720 nm. Strong PL intensity could be observed from 550 to 860 nm. Room-temperature peak intensities were within an order of magnitude of peak intensities of AlGaAs/GaAs multi-quantum wells taken at 4.2 K, and total intensities were comparable. A blue shift of peak intensities from ∼680 to 620 nm could be observed after thermal an
