Sequential Anomaly Detection using Inverse Reinforcement Learning
Min-hwan Oh, Garud Iyengar
FWCI 5.9

One of the most interesting application scenarios in anomaly detection is when sequential data are targeted. For example, in a safety-critical environment, it is crucial to have an automatic detection system to screen the streaming data gathered by monitoring sensors and to report abnormal observations if detected in real-time. Oftentimes, stakes are much higher when these potential anomalies are intentional or goal-oriented. We propose an end-to-end framework for sequential anomaly detection us

Efficient "Shotgun" Inference of Neural Connectivity from Highly Sub-sampled Activity Data

Inferring connectivity in neuronal networks remains a key challenge in statistical neuroscience. The "common input" problem presents a major roadblock: it is difficult to reliably distinguish causal connections between pairs of observed neurons versus correlations induced by common input from unobserved neurons. Available techniques allow us to simultaneously record, with sufficient temporal resolution, only a small fraction of the network. Consequently, naive connectivity estimators that neglec

Thompson Sampling for Multinomial Logit Contextual Bandits
Min-hwan Oh, Garud Iyengar
FWCI 6.4Neural Information Processing Systems

We consider a dynamic assortment selection problem where the goal is to offer a sequence of assortments that maximizes the expected cumulative revenue, or alternatively, minimize the expected regret. The feedback here is the item that the user picks from the assortment. The distinguishing feature in this work is that this feedback has a multinomial logistic distribution. The utility of each item is a dynamic function of contextual information of both the item and the user. We propose two Thompso

Struvite Crystallization of Anaerobic Digestive Fluid of Swine Manure Containing Highly Concentrated Nitrogen

FWCI 2.0Asian-Australasian Journal of Animal SciencesOA

In this study, the optimal operation factors for struvite crystallization for removing and recovering nitrogen and phosphorus from anaerobic digestive fluid of swine manure containing highly concentrated nitrogen was determined. Every experiment for the struvite crystallization reaction was conducted by placing 1,000 mL of digestion fluid in a 2,000 mL Erlenmeyer flask at various temperatures, pH, and mixing speed. Except for special circumstances, the digestion fluid was centrifuged (10,000 rpm

Counting and Segmenting Sorghum Heads

Phenotyping is the process of measuring an organism's observable traits. Manual phenotyping of crops is a labor-intensive, time-consuming, costly, and error prone process. Accurate, automated, high-throughput phenotyping can relieve a huge burden in the crop breeding pipeline. In this paper, we propose a scalable, high-throughput approach to automatically count and segment panicles (heads), a key phenotype, from aerial sorghum crop imagery. Our counting approach uses the image density map obtain

Multinomial Logit Contextual Bandits: Provable Optimality and Practicality
Min-hwan Oh, Garud Iyengar
FWCI 2.8Proceedings of the AAAI Conference on Artificial IntelligenceOA

We consider a sequential assortment selection problem where the user choice is given by a multinomial logit (MNL) choice model whose parameters are unknown. In each period, the learning agent observes a d-dimensional contextual information about the user and the N available items, and offers an assortment of size K to the user, and observes the bandit feedback of the item chosen from the assortment. We propose upper confidence bound based algorithms for this MNL contextual bandit. The first algo

Crowd Counting with Decomposed Uncertainty

FWCI 0.9Proceedings of the AAAI Conference on Artificial IntelligenceOA

Research in neural networks in the field of computer vision has achieved remarkable accuracy for point estimation. However, the uncertainty in the estimation is rarely addressed. Uncertainty quantification accompanied by point estimation can lead to a more informed decision, and even improve the prediction quality. In this work, we focus on uncertainty estimation in the domain of crowd counting. With increasing occurrences of heavily crowded events such as political rallies, protests, concerts,

Automatic event detection in basketball using HMM with energy based defensive assignment

Abstract We propose a unsupervised learning framework for automatically labeling events in a basketball game. Our framework uses the the optical player tracking data in the NBA. We first learn the time series of defensive assignments using a novel player and location dependent attraction based model which uses hidden Markov models (HMMs), Gaussian processes, and a “bond breaking” model for changes in defensive assignments. Next, we use the learned defensive assignments as an input to a set of HM

Stochastic-Expert Variational Autoencoder for Collaborative Filtering
Yoon-Sik Cho, Min-hwan Oh
FWCI 1.3Proceedings of the ACM Web Conference 2022

Motivated by the recent successes of deep generative models used for collaborative filtering, we propose a novel framework of VAE for collaborative filtering using multiple experts and stochastic expert selection, which allows the model to learn a richer and more complex latent representation of user preferences. In our method, individual experts are sampled stochastically at each user-item interaction which can effectively utilize the variability among multiple experts. While we propose this fr

Personalized Federated Learning With Server-Side Information
Jaehun Song, Min-hwan Oh, Hyung‐Sin Kim
SJR Q1FWCI 0.8IEEE AccessOA

Personalized Federated Learning (FL) is an emerging research field in FL that learns an easily adaptable global model in the presence of data heterogeneity among clients. However, one of the main challenges for personalized FL is the heavy reliance on clients’ computing resources to calculate higher-order gradients since client data is segregated from the server to ensure privacy. To resolve this, we focus on a problem setting where the server may possess data independent of clients’ data – a pr

arXiv (Cornell University)OA

This paper is first-line research expanding GANs into graph topology analysis. By leveraging the hierarchical connectivity structure of a graph, we have demonstrated that generative adversarial networks (GANs) can successfully capture topological features of any arbitrary graph, and rank edge sets by different stages according to their contribution to topology reconstruction. Moreover, in addition to acting as an indicator of graph reconstruction, we find that these stages can also preserve impo

Sparsity-Agnostic Lasso Bandit

We consider a stochastic contextual bandit problem where the dimension $d$ of the feature vectors is potentially large, however, only a sparse subset of features of cardinality $s_0 \ll d$ affect the reward function. Essentially all existing algorithms for sparse bandits require a priori knowledge of the value of the sparsity index $s_0$. This knowledge is almost never available in practice, and misspecification of this parameter can lead to severe deterioration in the performance of existing me
