15A new Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technique, which is called a hybrid BCI, has recently been proposed to address the limitations of conventional single BCI system. Although some hybrid BCI studies have shown promising results, the field of hybrid BCI is still in its infancy and there is much to be done. Especially, since the hybrid BCI systems are so complicated and complex, it is difficult to understand the constituent and role of a hybrid BCI system at a glance. Also, the complicated and co
Abstract A variety of mobile phones are available to consumers. They differ from each other in many design features including shape, color, size, and material. This study attempts to identify some of the design features of a mobile phone critical to user satisfaction. Empirical models linking design features to satisfaction levels were developed and used to identify critical design features. Design properties common to “desirable” and “undesirable” phones were then extracted by comparing the val
The look-and-feel of the mobile phone was investigated using a consumer survey. Seventy-eight participants evaluated the design of 50 different mobile telephones on the perceived scale of image/impression characteristics, including: luxuriousness, simplicity, attractiveness, colourfulness, texture, delicacy, harmoniousness, salience, rigidity, and overall satisfaction. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis were used to evaluate results. The results showed that the image and impression cha
This paper systemically reviews and clarifies the state-of-the-art HRI evaluation studies especially for the usability of social robots. A total of 36 articles were collected through a keyword, abstract, title search from various online search engines. Afterwards, 163 measures were selected and reviewed carefully. This research was classified into two parts. In the first part, evaluation methodologies were investigated according to (1) type of stimuli on evaluation, (2) evaluation technique, and
Hand posture and force, which define aspects of the way an object is grasped, are features of robotic manipulation. A means for specifying these grasping "flavors" has been developed that uses an instrumented glove equipped with joint and force sensors. The new grasp specification system will be used at the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in a Virtual Reality based Point-and-Direct (VR-PAD) robotics implementation. Here, an operator gives directives to a robot in the same natural way
Disabled and elderly populations may not fully appreciate the benefits of advanced technologies and every-day products due to accessibility issues. However, the diverse characteristics of disabled and elderly users make conducting user research a challenging task for stakeholders who oversee the needs of developing accessible products. They need a tool providing rich information to empathize with the disabled and elderly users, instead of standards and documents without detailed explanation of r
The pressure distribution of the hand is an important element in evaluating hand tool grip. For measuring the pressure distributions of the hand, a portable sensor glove was developed using force sensitive resistors of the conductive polymer type. Pressure distributions of three hand tools for three male subjects were measured. The pressure distribution pattern varied significantly between type of grip, location, and subjective exertion level. Factor analysis was used to identify the relative im
Touch/feel quality of interior material is a critical element of customer's perception of overall product quality. Manufactures are increasingly interested in the affective evaluation as the perception of quality is heavily related to customer's feeling toward the product. Surface material quality is characterized by complex touch-feel sensations. In this study, 30 participants rated their affective reactions (how pleasant I feel) to surface materials of 30 different automobile interiors. Four c
