15The telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) assay has been used to test telomerase activity in numerous cancer specimens. We describe primers, controls and quantification methods for the TRAP assay to accurately measure the level of telomerase activity in clinical samples. The assay is reliable and reproducible in routine analyses and can be used to estimate the processivity of telomerase activity.
In this large, prospective evaluation of postoperative opioid consumption, we found that patients are being prescribed approximately 3 times greater opioid medications than needed following upper-extremity surgical procedures. We have provided general prescribing guidelines, and we recommend that surgeons carefully examine their patients' opioid utilization and consider customizing their opioid prescriptions on the basis of anatomic location and procedure type to prescribe the optimal amount of
The increased primary and secondary antibiotic resistance of H. pylori in Korea is ongoing, and it will become a significant limitation for effective eradication of H. pylori in the future.
H. pylori eradication may be a preventative strategy for intestinal-type gastric cancer by regression of atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia.
H. pylori infection was most important risk factor of AG and IM. Bacterial factors were found to be important risk factor for AG but environmental and host factors were more important for IM.
To identify the risk of gastric cancer in first-degree relatives of gastric cancer patients, and to determine if there is an interaction between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and family history of gastric cancer in gastric carcinogenesis. It is unclear to what degree a family history of gastric cancer is associated with stomach cancer risk in Korea. From May 2003 to July 2008, 428 gastric cancer patients and 368 controls were included in the analyses. Logistic regression models includi
Clarithromycin resistance of H. pylori, which determined the efficacy of H. pylori eradication of proton pump inhibitor triple regimen, was found to be increased in a single center study. A2143G was an important 23S rRNA mutation associated with clarithromycin resistance and affected the H. pylori eradication efficacy.
Eleven years has passed since the guideline of the Korean College of Helicobacter and Upper Gastrointestinal Research group for H. pylori infection was produced in 1998. During this period the research for H. pylori has much progressed that H. pylori is now regarded as the major cause of gastric cancer. The seroprevalence of H. pylori in Korea was found to be decreased especially below the age of 40s and in the area of Seoul-Gyeonggi province, and annual reinfection rate of H. pylori has decreas
A nationwide survey regarding the prevalence of endoscopic AG and IM and their risk factors in Korea supports the hypothesis that endoscopic diagnosis of these premalignant lesions could be helpful to describe a group at high risk for gastric cancer.
The present study shows a close relationship between H. pylori infection and IM, and between IM and the development of gastric cancer. In addition, our finding suggests that chronic H. pylori infection looks like an important risk factor for the development of gastric cancer in Korea, where the prevalence of H. pylori remains high. This study indicates that to prevent gastric cancer H. pylori eradication is best performed before the development of IM.
These results suggest that the genetic polymorphisms of these 3 inflammation-related cytokines, IL-10, IL-8, and IL-6, are associated with the development of H. pylori-associated gastroduodenal disease.
We could not find the significant role of bacteria other than HP in the gastric carcinogenesis.
These results show that there is institutional difference of antibiotic resistance of H. pylori, explaining the institutional difference of eradication rate of H. pylori. The resistance to clarithromycin seems to be an important determinant for the eradication by proton pump inhibitor triple therapy but resistance to amoxicillin does not have any effect.
The aims of this study were to demonstrate the trends in seropositivity and the eradication therapy rate for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) over an 18-year period in an asymptomatic Korean population and to explore the factors associated with H. pylori seropositivity and its eradication therapy. In total, 23,770 subjects (aged 17-97 years) from a health examination center participated in this cross-sectional study from January 2016 to June 2017. Questionnaires that included questions about the
