15Colon targeted drug delivery systems have gained a great deal of attention as potential carriers for the local treatment of colonic diseases with reduced systemic side effects and also for the enhanced oral delivery of various therapeutics vulnerable to acidic and enzymatic degradation in the upper gastrointestinal tract. In recent years, the global pharmaceutical market for biologics has grown, and increasing demand for a more patient-friendly drug administration system highlights the importanc
A microfluidic apparatus capable of creating continuous microscale cylindrical polymeric structures has been developed. This system is able to produce microstructures (e.g. fibers, tubes) by employing 3D multiple stream laminar flow and "on the fly"in-situ photopolymerization. The details of the fabrication process and the characterization of the produced microfibers are described. The apparatus is constructed by merging pulled glass pipettes with PDMS molding technology and used to manufacture
In several experiments, it was found that global perception of spatial form can arise exclusively from unpredictable but synchronized changes among local features. Within an array of nonoverlapping apertures, contours move in one of two directions, with direction reversing randomly over time. When contours within a region of the array reverse directions in synchrony, they stand out conspicuously from the rest of the array where direction reversals are unsynchronized. Clarity of spatial structure
These studies provide evidence that biological activity of CHIR-258 in tumors correlates with efficacy and aids in the identification of potential biomarkers of this multitargeted receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor. CHIR-258 exhibits properties that make it a promising candidate for clinical development in a variety of solid and hematologic malignancies.
The nucleation of hydroxyapatite (HAp) crystal through chemical interaction with collagen was investigated. A collagen membrane was soaked in a supersaturated simulated body fluid (1.5 SBF) solution with ion concentrations at 1.5 times that of normal simulated body fluid (1.0 SBF). A few carbonate‐containing HAp crystals were formed mostly on the edge‐side of the collagen membrane after 4 weeks. In the Fourier‐transform infrared spectometry (FTIR) results, the carboxylate band of the collagen me
Our study illustrated that TG levels are associated with mortality in patients with sepsis. This may be attributable to alterations in serum lipid metabolism during sepsis, thus modulating the host response to inflammation in critically ill patients.
During binocular rivalry, one of two incompatible monocular stimuli is erased from perceptual awareness for seconds at a time. To examine whether this "rivalry suppression" occurs in V1, we measured functional magnetic resonance imaging activity during binocular rivalry and compared it with those in the two reference conditions: one representing complete suppression and the other representing no suppression. We found that the amplitude of V1 activity during rivalry fell midway between those in t
The coating of a carbonate‐containing hydroxyapatite (HAp) on a nonbioactive collagen membrane via a biomimetic method has been investigated. The collagen membranes were soaked in a simulated body fluid (SBF) solution with and without citric acid, and carbonate‐containing HAp formed only in the SBF solution that contained citric acid. The results were explained in terms of the strong chelation ability of citric acid with the calcium ion. Practical application may involve the inclusion of citric
