15We demonstrated room temperature cross-linkable gel polymer electrolytes (GPE) prepared by in situ cationic polymerization of tri(ethylene glycol) divinyl ether (TEGDVE) with LIBF4 that yields protonic acid and Lewis acid as an acidic initiating system by the reaction with water as an impurity in the liquid electrolyte. FTIR analysis reveals that TEGDVE in the liquid electrolyte is successfully polymerized into gel polymer electrolyte. The resulting gel polymer electrolyte showed promising elect
In this paper we describe the preparation and preliminary characterization of diblock copolymers with a low surface energy block. These polymers were prepared by modifying the isoprene block in styreneisoprene-based block copolymers with either short perfluoroalkyl or dimethyl siloxy ‘fingers’. Specifically, the diene block of a styrene-isoprene block copolymer containing a large proportion of pendent vinyl groups (1,2- and 3,4-isoprene) was reacted with the appropriate hydrosilane in the prese
The principle of homophily is central to several social-science theories. When applied to the study of population change in geographic areas these theories predict racial homogeneity in residential settlement patterns. The concentration of one group in an area is expected to attract same-group members while deterring others. We examine this prediction using data on 1980-90 population change for four ethnic groups in 1672 U.S. suburban cities. The findings from our analysis contradict the princip
This study evaluates the empirical merits of a multilevel model of English language proficiency among immigrants. The model represents a synthesis of Blau's theory of intergroup relations and the human capital model. Hypotheses derived from the model were tested using multilevel ordinal logistic analysis with individual and aggregate data from the 2000 U.S. Census for members of 20 non-English language groups. The results lent strong support to predictions derived from Blau's theory. As expected
Objectives: During the spring of 2002, an unprecedented 2 Asian dust events were experienced in Seoul. On those days, the was surprisingly increased, with daily averages exceeding on March 21 and April 8, respectively. Accordingly, public concern relating to the possible adverse health effects of these dust events has increased, as the dust arrives in Korea after having flown over heavily industrialized eastern China. We investigated the effects of these Asian dust events on the mortality during
Recently, resistance to additional first-line and injectable drugs was reported to be an independent risk factor for adverse outcomes in multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) patients. The aim of the present study was to confirm these observations in MDR-TB patients without HIV infection. MDR-TB patients treated at a tertiary referral hospital in South Korea between January 1996 and December 2005 were included. The unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios of adverse treatment outcome were calcu
The extent to which residential segregation results from differences in the socioeconomic status of racial/ethnic groups remains a topic of debate. Although recent studies have argued that improvements in minority groups' socioeconomic status will lead to reduced residential segregation, such analyses have been cross-sectional. This study uses longitudinal data from 27 central cities in Texas to examine the effects of 1970,1980, and 1970–80 changes in socioeconomic status on Black-White, Anglo-S
