15Although pelvic irradiation is effective for the treatment of various cancer types, many patients who receive radiotherapy experience serious complications. Gut microbial dysbiosis was hypothesized to be related to the occurrence of radiation-induced complications in cancer patients. Given the lack of clinical or experimental data on the impact of radiation on gut microbiota, a prospective observational study of gut microbiota was performed in gynecological cancer patients receiving pelvic radio
Antioxidant supplementations are commonly used as an ergogenic aid for physical exercise despite its limited evidence. The study aimed to investigate the effects of a polyphenol mixture and vitamins on exercise endurance capacity. Seventy regularly exercising male participants were randomly assigned to receive oligomerized lychee fruit extract, a mixture of vitamin C (800 mg) and E (320 IU), or a placebo for 30 consecutive days. The study results showed that oligomerized lychee fruit extract sig
The underlying changes in heart coherence that are associated with reported EEG changes in response to meditation have been explored. We measured EEG and heart rate variability (HRV) before and during autogenic meditation. Fourteen subjects participated in the study. Heart coherence scores were significantly increased during meditation compared to the baseline. We found near significant decrease in high beta absolute power, increase in alpha relative power and significant increases in lower (alp
Our previous study demonstrated that phlorotannin supplement had a sleep-promoting effect in rodents. In the present study, we investigated whether the phlorotannin supplement could improve sleep in subjects with self-reported sleep disturbances. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 24 subjects consumed either a placebo or phlorotannin supplement (500 mg/day) for 1 week, 30-60 min prior to bedtime. Sleep parameters were assessed at baseline and at 1 week with sleep questionna
We describe the utility of a standardized index (Z-score) in quantitative EEG (QEEG) capable of when referenced to a resting-state, sex- and age-differentiated QEEG normative database (ISB-NormDB). Our ISB-NormDB comprises data for 1,289 subjects (553 males, 736 females) ages 4.5 to 81 years that met strict normative data criteria. A de-noising process allowed stratification based on QEEG variability between normal healthy men and women at various age ranges. The ISB-NormDB data set that is stra
Developing reliable biomarkers is important for screening Alzheimer's disease (AD) and monitoring its progression. Although EEG is non-invasive direct measurement of brain neural activity and has potentials for various neurologic disorders, vulnerability to noise, difficulty in clinical interpretation and quantification of signal information have limited its clinical application. There have been many research about machine learning (ML) adoption with EEG, but the accuracy of detecting AD is not
The use of positron emission tomography (PET) as the initial or sole biomarker of β-amyloid (Aβ) brain pathology may inhibit Alzheimer's disease (AD) drug development and clinical use due to cost, access, and tolerability. We developed a qEEG-ML algorithm to predict Aβ pathology among subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients, and validated it using Aβ PET. We compared QEEG data between patients with MCI and those with SCD with and without PET-confirmed beta
Estimating EEG-based network properties in the acute phase of ischemic stroke through a machine learning model has a potential to predict cognitive outcomes after ischemic stroke.
Online mind-body training (MBT) programs can improve the psychological capabilities of practitioners. Although there has been a lot of effort to understand the neural mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of meditation, little is known about changes in electroencephalographic (EEG) functional connectivity that accompany mind-body training. The present study aimed to investigate how an online MBT program alters EEG functional connectivity in the default mode network (DMN). We assessed a g
Quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) analysis is commonly adopted for the investigation of various neurological disorders, revealing electroencephalogram (EEG) features associated with specific dysfunctions. Conventionally, topographies are widely utilized for spatial representation of EEG characteristics at specific frequencies or frequency bands. However, multiple topographies at various frequency bands are required for a complete description of brain activity. In consequence, use of top
Depression is a prevalent mental disorder in modern society, causing many people to suffer or even commit suicide. Psychiatrists and psychologists typically diagnose depression using representative tests, such as the Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), in conjunction with patient consultations. Traditional tests, however, are time-consuming, can be trained on patients, and entailed a lot of clinician subjectivity. In the present study, we trained th
Transient global amnesia (TGA) is recognized as a benign memory disorder, with characteristic clinical and imaging features. However, the pathophysiology of TGA remains elusive. This study aims to elucidate the pathophysiological changes underlying TGA by exploring the brain activities. In total, 215 patients with TGA (age: 61.8 ± 7.8 years; women: 146) with MRI (within 7 days) and EEG studies (within 90 days) were recruited. Quantitative EEG (QEEG) power spectra and network analysis were perfor
D espite the recent increase in the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) among the general population and patients, little is known about Korean physicians' attitudes about and interest in CAM. We conducted a web-based survey of knowledge, attitude, and experience in CAM among primary care physicians (PCPs) and academic physicians (APs) in Korea. A total of 826 physicians (341 PCPs and 485 APs) responded. Respondents in both groups felt that they were not sufficiently knowledgeabl
Abstract Introduction: Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD) has now become a crucial concern for modern society as a result of increased life expectancy. However, it is often difficult for a majority of the population to afford expensive medical imaging tests for accurate diagnosis. As a solution, quantitative analysis of electroencephalography (EEG) that aids in a sufficient description of brain activities can be employed as a cost-effective, safe and objective diagnostic tool. In the presented r
