15Abstract We investigated the scaling and topology of engineered urban drainage networks (UDNs) in two cities, and further examined UDN evolution over decades. UDN scaling was analyzed using two power law scaling characteristics widely employed for river networks: (1) Hack's law of length ( L )‐area ( A ) [ ] and (2) exceedance probability distribution of upstream contributing area ( δ ) [ ]. For the smallest UDNs (<2 km 2 ), length‐area scales linearly ( h ∼ 1), but power law scaling ( h ∼ 0.
We employed the well-established Horton-Strahler, hierarchical, stream-order (ω) scheme to investigate scaling of nutrient loads (P and N) from ~845 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) distributed along the river network in urbanized Weser River, the largest national basin in Germany (~46K km2; ~8.4 million population). We estimated hydrologic and water quality impacts at the reach- and basin-scales, at two steady river discharge conditions (median flow, QR50; low-flow, Q<s
Algae, as primary producers in riverine ecosystems, are found in two distinct habitats: benthic and pelagic algae typically prevalent in shallow/small and deep/large streams, respectively. Over an entire river continuum, spatiotemporal patterns of the two algal communities reflect specificity in habitat preference determined by geomorphic structure, hydroclimatic controls, and spatiotemporal heterogeneity in nutrient loads from point- and diffuse-sources. By representing these complex interactio
Abstract Discharge from multiple wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) distributed in urbanized river basins contributes to impairments of river water‐quality and aquatic ecosystem integrity, with size and location of WWTPs determined by population distribution within a river basin. Here we used geo‐referenced data for WWTPs in Germany to investigate the spatial organization of three attributes of interest in this study: population, population equivalents (the aggregated population served by each
Horton’s laws have long served as fundamental principles for fractal organization of a drainage basin. Scaling ratios of stream number, length, area, and side tributary have been proposed but the definitions of these basic variables are inconsistent. The concept of eigenarea can be utilized to resolve this issue. Here, we investigated the relationships among Hortonian scaling ratios using the concept of eigenarea. We found that the eigenarea ratio, likewise other scaling ratios, is invariant wit
We investigated the scaling and topology of engineered urban drainage networks (UDNs) in two cities, and further examined UDN evolution over decades. UDN scaling was analyzed using two power-law characteristics widely employed for river networks: (1) Hack's law of length ($L$)-area ($A$) scaling [$L \propto A^{h}$], and (2) exceedance probability distribution of upstream contributing area $(δ)$ [$P(A\geq δ) \sim a δ^{-ε}$]. For the smallest UDNs ($<2 \>\text{km}^2$), length-area scales lin
Structural and functional attributes across fractal river networks have been characterized by well-established and consistent hierarchical, Hortonian scaling patterns. In most of the global river basins, spatial patterns of human settlements also conform to similar hierarchical scaling. However, emergent spatial hierarchical patterns and scaling of heterogeneous anthropogenic nutrient loads over a river basin are less known. As a case study, we examined here a large intensely managed river basin
Abstract Over the last decades, treatment of domestic wastewater promoted by environmental regulations have reduced human health risks and improved water quality. However, ecological risks caused by effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) discharged into rivers still persist. Moreover, the evolution of these ecological risks in the future is intimately related to effects of changing climate, especially regarding streamflow in receiving rivers. Here, we present an analytical and transfer
Abstract. Floods are often disastrous due to underestimation of the magnitude of rare events. Underestimation commonly happens when the occurrence of floods follow a heavy-tailed distribution, but this behavior is not recognized and thus neglected for flood hazard assessment. In fact, identifying heavy-tailed flood behavior is challenging because of limited data records and the lack of physical support for currently used indices. We address these issues by deriving a new index of heavy-tailed fl
Abstract. Self-similar structures of river networks have been quantified as having diverse scaling laws. Among these, we investigated a power function relationship between the apparent drainage density ρa and the pruning area Ap, with an exponent η. We analytically derived the relationship between η and other known scaling exponents of fractal river networks. The analysis of 14 real river networks covering a diverse range of climate conditions and free-flow connectivity levels supports our deriv
Anthropogenic nutrient inputs lead to severe degradation of surface water resources, affecting aquatic ecosystem health and functioning. Ecosystem functions such as nutrient cycling and ecosystem metabolism are not only affected by the over-abundance of a single macronutrient but also by the stoichiometry of the reactive molecular forms of dissolved organic carbon (rOC), nitrogen (rN), and phosphorus (rP). So far, studies mainly considered only single macronutrients or used stoichiometric ratios
Eutrophication persists in many freshwater systems despite extensive efforts to control nutrient emissions from point and diffuse sources. While intensely studied at local or regional scales, the joint response of benthic and pelagic algae to nutrient loading across entire river networks remains poorly understood. Here, we assessed spatial patterns of pelagic and benthic algal biomass in response to point source and diffuse phosphorus loading in the Elbe River Basin, a temperate, transboundary r
