15A new mechanism for high-temperature sensing with single-mode optical fibers is proposed. This sensing mechanism is based on whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonance in bent optical fibers. The interference fringes between the core mode and WGMs were induced by bending a cladding-thinned fiber and forming a loop in the fiber. The wavelength shift of the resonance peaks as a function of temperature is investigated. It is demonstrated that the single loop of bend ring in the fibers can be used as a
[1] Low-oxygen and low-pH events are an increasing concern and threat in the Eastern Pacific coastal waters, and can be lethal for benthic and demersal organisms on the continental shelf. The normal seasonal cycle includes uplifting of isopycnals during upwelling in spring, which brings low-oxygen and low-pH water onto the shelf. Five years of continuous observations of subsurface dissolved oxygen off Southern California, reveal large additional oxygen deficiencies relative to the seasonal cycle
The poor burning resistance of cotton necessitates the control of its pyrolytic reactions, but many approaches have relied on the use of synthetically engineered chemicals. Herein, we show how a natural polyphenol from plants-tannic acid-acts with sodium ions to create a robust thermal barrier coat on cotton, with a focus on thermal kinetics. The kinetic information, combined with thermal and spectral analyses, revealed that the outer layer of galloyl units in tannic acid decomposes via a
[1] Near-bottom diurnal thermocline shoaling and diurnal baroclinic currents were observed from time series data of water temperature, salinity, pressure, and velocity collected from August 2006 to January 2007 in the nearshore zone off the Huntington Beach where the local inertial frequency is higher than the diurnal frequency (poleward of the diurnal critical latitude). During the stratified season, the deep offshore cold (dense) water, when shoaled into shallow water along the bottom, was oft
Monodisperse cyclic poly(oxyethylene) (CPOE) was synthesized from linear dihydroxy-terminated poly(oxyethylene) (LPOE) with molecular weights from 400 to 1500 g/mol. Blends of CPOE with LPOE were prepared and examined with pulsed-field-gradient (PFG) 1H NMR and rheology to determine the self-diffusion coefficient (D) and zero-shear viscosity (η) in the melt. Single average diffusion coefficients were measured for all blends. For blends prepared from components with equivalent molecular weights >
Abstract Typhoon Soulik decayed rapidly via two‐way interaction with the northern East China Sea, the extratropical shelf region, before landing on the Korean Peninsula on 23 August 2018. In the northern East China Sea, where the water column is strongly stratified with warm surface and cold subsurface waters, a large cold wake emerged with intense sea surface cooling, which is primarily caused by vertical mixing in the water column. This abrupt sea surface cooling rapidly increased the downward
Abstract. Terra Nova Bay in Antarctica is a formation region for high-salinity shelf water (HSSW), which is a major source of Antarctic Bottom Water. Here, we analyze spatiotemporal salinity variability in Terra Nova Bay with implications for the local HSSW production. The salinity variations in the Drygalski Basin and eastern Terra Nova Bay near Crary Bank in the Ross Sea were investigated by analyzing hydrographic data from instrumented moorings, vessel-based profiles, and available wind and s
